Overview

About this hotel

A combined museum and hotel on Naoshima, designed by Tadao Ando, about ten minutes by car from Miyanoura Port. Contemporary art is on permanent display in the building and on the grounds, and guests can view it outside opening hours. Naoshima is one of the stages of the Setouchi Triennale. It holds two Michelin Keys in the 2026 selection. The accommodation is split across four buildings — Museum, Oval, Park and Beach — each built differently.

Who it suits

Suits a stay on Naoshima where seeing contemporary art is the point. Guests can view the works outside opening hours, so you can be in the museum when it is quiet. The four buildings differ, so which one you book shapes the stay.

Fantastic hotel. Loved the Brutalist architecture. Staff incredibly helpful, led by the wonderful Wakako.

Benesse House Park on Naoshima is one of the most unique hotel experiences I’ve ever had. Designed by Tadao Ando, it feels less like staying at a hotel and more like temporarily living inside a piece of architecture. The interplay of concrete, light, silence, ocean views, and contemporary art creates an atmosphere that is impossible to replicate anywhere else. Every hallway, staircase, and framed view of the Seto Inland Sea feels intentional. Is it expensive? Absolutely. And if you compare it purely on room luxury or amenities against similarly priced hotels in Tokyo or Osaka, it’s probably not the “best deal” in Japan. But that completely misses the point. You’re paying for access to a singular experience: waking up surrounded by world-class contemporary art, wandering museum spaces after hours, and experiencing Naoshima in a way day-trippers simply can’t. The Park rooms themselves are understated and minimalist, but that restraint is part of the magic. The architecture never competes with the landscape or the artwork. Instead, it quietly frames both. Staying here made me slow down in a way few hotels ever have. If you love art, architecture, or thoughtfully designed spaces, Benesse House Park is not just a hotel stay. It’s a destination experience that stays with you long after you leave Naoshima.

Fantastic location, wonderful staff, excellent delicious buffet breaskfast, all in all a wonderful place to stay! IF you manage to book it, that is! One star off for the booking experience on the website, which is quite arcane and time consuming (even on their website it's a bit difficult to locate the 'availability slots'). And, once you have a reservation, good luck changing your mind about booking dinner/breakfast. The website english language is confusing: the options are 'change' and 'cancel' reservation--scary, I don't want to cancel this incredibly-hard-to-book-room!--and in the end neither work. Luckly, after some email exchanges, a real person responded by email and changed my res to add a breakfast. Booking this hotel took an inordinate amount of time and effort online, but it was worth it in the end.
