About this hotel
In Kamimachi in Kochi, on the site of the house where Sakamoto Ryoma was born. It sets out to be a place to "launder yourself", and the interiors put Japanese and Western together. There are 33 rooms: sixteen twins of 37 sqm, sixteen corner twins of 38 sqm, and one Premium Sauna Suite of 86 sqm with a sauna and a place to rest in the bathroom. Inside are the restaurant MARGINAL, a bar lounge, a terrace and a free space called Okyakuba.
Who it suits
The address itself — the site of Ryoma's birthplace — is the reason to stay. The building is new, though; this is not a stay in a historic house. There is no communal bath and no hot spring, so it does not suit a trip built around one. Thirty-two of the rooms take one or two people, and only the sauna suite takes four, which makes it hard to book for a group.

Modern rooms, that look very nice but lack a few practical components, like a coat hook or hanger. Also, some rooms didn't have windows that would open, others had a bad view. The service was impeccable, staff is very friendly. The complimentary lounge area offers many drinks and snacks. The breakfast (only with reservation) is delicious.
Read the full review on Google MapsJapan has both hotels and ryokan (traditional Japanese inns). This hotel was recommended to me by my credit card concierge as the most luxurious place in Kochi City where a solo traveler could stay, and I spent three nights here in early March. (Unfortunately, many ryokan in Japan do not accept solo guests.) The room is Japanese-style in the sense that you remove your shoes, but it also has a bed, which I found very comfortable. The room was exceptionally clean and well maintained, even by Japanese standards. Mine was listed as a south-facing room, and it overlooked the quiet streets of a rural Japanese town. The view was peaceful and somehow deeply relaxing. Perhaps it was just the timing of my stay, but both the hotel and the surrounding area were remarkably quiet. I especially enjoyed spending time on the rooftop, looking out over the neighborhood, and taking slow walks around the area. One small thing to note is that breakfast must be reserved in advance in one of three time slots: 7:30, 8:00, or 8:30. Those who prefer a more flexible morning schedule may want to keep that in mind. I actually overslept and missed it. That said, there is also a wonderful local diner nearby that I would highly recommend. I had a late breakfast at a family-run place called 椰子の実(Yashinomi), and it was excellent.
Read the full review on Google MapsFor our final night in Kochi, we really enjoyed hotel nansui for the convenient parking, quick and easy check-in, clean and high-tech facilities and friendly service. The hotel restaurant far exceeded our expectations. Very happy with our stay!
