HOSHINOYA Kyoto: a riverside ryokan reached by boat
HOSHINOYA Kyoto is a ryokan on the Oi River, reached by a private boat from the landing by Togetsukyo Bridge. With no direct road access, the journey to the inn is designed as part of the stay.
Because the boat runs to a schedule, fix your check-in and check-out times before you plan sightseeing. It is not suited to trips with a lot of luggage.
Suiran: Arashiyama on foot
Suiran stands east of Tenryu-ji on the bank of the Oi River. A Meiji-era villa building sits alongside modern wings, so the character of a room depends on which building it is in. Its garden makes the most of the riverside.
The bamboo grove and Togetsukyo Bridge are within walking distance, so it suits a stay that enjoys Arashiyama in the morning and evening, after the day crowds leave. Rooms with an open-air hot-spring bath are limited.
