About this hotel
On the bank of the Oi river, east of Tenryu-ji in Arashiyama. Wings kept from a Meiji-era villa stand alongside modern ones, so the building your room is in changes what the room is like. The garden makes use of the riverside setting.
Who it suits
A stay for the early mornings and evenings, once the day's visitors have left Arashiyama. The bamboo grove and Togetsukyo are walkable, though the area is crowded through the middle of the day. Only a few rooms have their own open-air bath.

What this place is like
Checked against the hotel’s own site. Anything we could not confirm is left out — that does not mean it is not there.
Hot spring: 17 rooms have their own open-air bath; the private onsen costs extra
Of the 39 rooms, 17 — including four suites — have a private open-air bath. The Yuzunoha deluxe room, for example, is listed with an “in-room hot-spring open-air bath”. The hotel’s water is natural Arashiyama onsen, a simple spring. Two private open-air baths for staying guests, Raku (hinoki cypress) and An (rock), can be reserved for 45 minutes at a time for a fee.
From the editors
Only 17 rooms have their own bath, not all of them. Before booking, check that the room type lists an in-room hot-spring open-air bath.

Dining: kaiseki meets French at Kyo Suiran, and a four-seat teppanyaki counter
Kyo Suiran combines kaiseki technique with a French sensibility; Kanzan is a teppanyaki counter with only four seats; and Saryo Hassui has a terrace looking over the Hozu River and Arashiyama. Kyo Suiran also has a private room, Shogetsu, facing the Japanese garden.

Getting there: a free pick-up by taxi from Kyoto Station or by rickshaw in Arashiyama
The hotel is on the Hozu River, about five minutes’ walk from Togetsukyo Bridge: six minutes from Randen Arashiyama Station, 15 from JR Saga-Arashiyama and Hankyu Arashiyama. From Kyoto Station’s Hachijo exit it is about 35 minutes by taxi. Staying guests get one free one-way pick-up — either a rickshaw from Saga-Arashiyama or Randen Arashiyama, or a taxi from Kyoto Station — booked at least three days before arrival. Parking (nine spaces) costs extra.

Fantastic and extremely serene hotel in the base of the mountains alongside a river and a >1000 year old bridge in Kyoto (best part of the city). The staff is incredibly attentive, friendly and helpful and the room was gorgeous. Very glad we booked here instead of in town, especially coming from Tokyo first, it was a beautiful contrast.
Read the full review on Google Maps“If you want to understand the high-stakes, hyper-insulated world of modern global luxury trying to buy itself a piece of ancient soul, look no further than the banks of the jade-green Hozu River. Here, tucked away in the scenic, bamboo-fringed postcard of Arashiyama, sits Suiran, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Kyoto. It is a stunning, meticulously manicured compound built on the grounds of a historical summer palace, and it is designed to completely soothe your nervous system—while violently vacuuming your wallet.” The Vibe The location is, frankly, unbeatable. While everyone else staying in the concrete center of Kyoto is fighting for a taxi, you are waking up on the quiet edge of the river. The design is a beautiful, delicate tightrope walk between traditional Ryokan aesthetics and the heavy-duty, predictable comforts of a Western five-star resort. You’ve got the low-slung furniture, the immaculate woodwork, and the absolute, dead-silent serenity that only a meticulously maintained Japanese garden can provide. Step outside, and the iconic bamboo forest and Tenryu-ji temple are practically in your backyard. The Protocol This is a place where hospitality is treated like a high-wire act. The Happy Hour: As evening crawls in, they set up a veranda seating arrangement directly overlooking the rushing river. You sit there, sipping free-flowing champagne or sake while watching the shadows stretch across the Arashiyama mountains. It is a deeply cinematic, almost absurdly romantic experience. The Private Onsen: Many of the rooms feature their own open-air hot spring baths out on the wooden terrace. Slipping into that mineral-rich, steaming water while looking at the mountain foliage is the kind of indulgence that makes you forget whatever crimes you committed to afford the room. The Food: The dining room handles seasonal Japanese ingredients with flawless, classic execution. Is it wildly adventurous? No. But it is clean, beautifully paced, and thoroughly satisfying. The Reality Check So why only four stars? Because beneath the exquisite Japanese lacquer and the ancient stone paths, this is still a Marriott property. At times, the heavy, corporate machinery can poke through the romance. You might find a slight hitch in communication before arrival, or a moment where the service feels a bit more like standard, focus-grouped luxury protocol rather than the deeply personal, idiosyncratic soul of a family-run ryokan. It is a gilded cage—an incredibly beautiful, flawless cage—but it isolates you completely from the raw, beautifully messy reality of everyday Japan. The Verdict Let’s be entirely transparent: a stay at Suiran will cost you an astronomical sum of money. If you are looking for an gritty, underground cultural deep-dive, you are entirely in the wrong zip code. But if you want to retreat from the world, drink champagne on a historic riverbank, and soak in a private hot tub beneath the trees while being pampered by a hyper-professional staff, this place delivers exactly what it promises. It’s calculated, it's corporate-backed, but goddamn, it is a magnificent place to hide out.
Read the full review on Google MapsThe hotel grounds are beautiful. We went in June when everything was lush and green and humming with summer. It drizzled a little, but that gave it its own charm, and the next day cleared right up! We soaked in a private hot-spring bath made of wood! There was even a free taxi for the trip back—so convenient! The service was excellent all around.
