Overview

About this hotel

A ryokan at Yamashiro Onsen in Kaga, run by the same family for eighteen generations since the days of the feudal domain. It is about ten minutes by car from JR Kaga Onsen Station and has a large bath drawing water straight from the source. Yamashiro is known as a place where the artist Rosanjin stayed, and Kutani porcelain kilns are scattered around it. It holds one Michelin Key in the 2026 selection.

Who it suits

Suits a stay centred on the hot spring of a long-established inn, in a town tied to Rosanjin and Kutani porcelain. It is a short drive from Kaga Onsen Station, so it fits easily into a trip on the Hokuriku shinkansen.

Exceptional quality and service, tucked into the foothills of a lush mountain landscape. Every gourmet dish is thoughtfully prepared by a top chef using an impressive variety of fresh local catches and regional delicacies. Ayara TOTOAN offers the kind of unforgettable experience one dreams about for years.

We stayed here in early April for two nights and had an amazing time. The service is impeccable and the rooms are very nice. We especially loved the private open-air hot spring baths in the room. The privacy is great and you can control the temperature by adding a bit of cold water. Our kids preferred to have the baths a bit cooler than the shared onsen, which are beautiful but quite hot for the kids. The kaiseki meals both nights were in a private room for our family and were really great. The chef accommodated our no-seafood dietary restrictions very well, even though the whole area is very seafood focused. Overall it was just a very relaxing stay. The ryokan is located right next to the historic public bathhouse, and there is a mountain behind the ryokan, and that’s why the views from the room are very green and private even though the ryokan is in the town. We visited over Monday and Tuesday, so the town was very quiet and shops closed early. It doesn’t matter though, if you are primarily spending time relaxing at the ryokan, which is what we did. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful.

Staying at Araya Tatoan was truly a memorable experience. Despite being a foreigner and solo traveler who doesn’t speak much Japanese, the staff consistently made me feel welcome. They were very kind. I chose the twin room with an open-air bath, which was perfect. The room was immaculate and beautifully designed, combining traditional Japanese style with modern amenities. As with all ryokans, Araya Tatoan offers an extremely relaxing atmosphere. The private open-air bath uses the same potent onsen water as the public bath and has a serene view of green trees on a hillside. I also opted for both dinner and breakfast, which I highly recommend doing as well. The food was absolutely incredible. You can simply walk down in your yukata to enjoy the meals in a private room. Yamashiro Onsen is a nice town, but it gets extremely quiet in the evening. Also, breaking up the experience to find someplace to eat might be disruptive, so you’re better off just staying inside the ryokan and enjoying the Kaiseki dinner and breakfast offerings. You’ll find there’s really no need to ever leave during your stay. Since this was my first experience at a ryokan, I felt it was necessary to research the rules and protocols before my arrival. The more you know in advance, the more fulfilling your experience will be. While I drove in a rental car from Kanazawa, I know that Araya Totoan offers a free shuttle service to and from Kaga Onsen Shinkansen station, which is about 15 minutes away. From there, you can easily hop on a train to Kanazawa, Tokyo, or Kyoto. Honestly I was sad to leave when my stay was over, but that’s how I know this was time and money well spent. Thank you for a memorable experience and I look forward to returning again on a future trip!
