Overview

About this hotel

A ryokan at Yamashiro Onsen in Kaga, with rooms set on grounds surrounded by bamboo and hot-spring water drawn to every room. It is about ten minutes by car from JR Kaga Onsen Station. Yamashiro is known for Kutani porcelain and its links to Rosanjin. It holds one Michelin Key in the 2026 selection, has a tea room and a reading room, and offers time in the garden each morning to loosen up.

Who it suits

Suits a slow stay in a quiet house surrounded by bamboo, using the hot spring in your room, the tea room and the reading room. Kaga Onsen Station is close, so it combines easily with Kanazawa or Fukui on the Hokuriku shinkansen.

What a wonderful place to stay! We loved our time at Beniya Mukayu. We enjoyed the onsen every day - especially the private onsen bath on our balcony. The gardens are so beautiful, filled with moss and Japanese plants. The kaiseki dinner was one of the most memorable parts of our trip and breakfast was delicious every day (and very big!). It is easy to get to the nearby town as there is a private elevator-type contraption which takes you to the heart of Yamanaka onsen. All of the staff were considerate and helpful, anticipating our needs and supporting our plans to explore the local area. I want to say special thank you to Aye, who was excellent and went above and beyond to take care of us during our stay.

Top-notch ryokan in Ishikawa Prefecture, defined by its beautiful, tranquil scenery and wonderful service. Overall, it was a great experience, and I would absolutely recommend it to anyone visiting the area. Best selling points: 1. Course meals We were very satisfied with the selection and quality of each meal. The flavors and aromas were well balanced. In particular, the dishes featuring local vegetables were exceptionally well prepared. 2. Scenery & Architecture This ryokan was renovated within the past ten years, and its modern architecture places a strong emphasis on Zen-inspired design. The overall style is artistic, and there are many libraries and reading spaces throughout the property. Combined with excellent soundproofing, the design contributes to a truly tranquil stay. 3. Service & Sanitation The ryokan is well staffed, and the service was excellent. The public onsen is cleaned regularly, and the rooms are serviced during dinner time. They also have English-speaking staff, which is helpful for tourists visiting from overseas. 4. Access This ryokan is easily accessible by Shinkansen from major cities such as Tokyo. The hotel provides a shuttle bus service from the nearest Shinkansen station, making access very convenient. The only downside is that both breakfast and dinner are served in a separate dining area rather than in the guest rooms, although this is common among most ryokan nowadays. It can also become quite expensive on weekends and during peak travel seasons. Personally, I feel they could reduce the number of staff members—especially those assisting with breakfast and dinner service—and offer slightly lower prices. However, as long as foreign tourism to Japan remains strong, the business will likely continue to do very well.

This is a very hospitable modernist Zen Inn. The proprietors treated us to a tea ceremony and orientation to classic Japanese culture. The kaiseki dinner was beautiful but not for everyone in our group. Compared to Gora Kadan at Hakone it was clearly superior, more intimate, less entreprenurial, and equally expensive.
