Overview

About this hotel

A villa property for staying with your dog, on the grounds of the Resol no Mori spa resort in Nagara, Chiba. It takes ten parties a day, in two room types: VILLA twin for one to three people and VILLA fourth for three to five. Each unit has its own natural hot spring bath and a private dog run of at least 135 square metres, surfaced with wood chips that are easier on a dog’s legs. The water is a dark brown sodium bicarbonate spring drawn from 600 m below ground. Meals can be taken in the room, as a barbecue on the private terrace, or as a kaiseki course in a historic building on the grounds. About 60 minutes by car from central Tokyo.

Who it suits

Built around travelling with a dog. Two dogs per person are included in the room rate, with a charge for each dog beyond that. The limit per unit is four small dogs (under 10 kg), three medium (10–20 kg) or two large (over 20 kg). Each unit has its own dog run and a deck terrace, so there is no need to go out to let a dog move. A crate for two, a paw-washing station, a pet camera, deodorising spray and waste bags are all provided. Taking the kaiseki course at the restaurant on the grounds means leaving the dog in the room, so it is worth deciding in advance between eating in the room and a barbecue on the terrace. The resort’s spa, golf course and adventure course are on the same grounds.

What this place is like

Checked against the hotel’s own site. Anything we could not confirm is left out — that does not mean it is not there.

Rooms: two types, each with its own dog run

There are two types: VILLA twin (one to three people, two single beds plus an extra bed) and VILLA fourth (three to five people, four single beds plus an extra bed). Each unit has its own garden with a private dog run of at least 135 square metres surfaced in wood chips, and a deck terrace looking onto it. Rooms come with a bath, a washlet toilet, a washbasin, a television, an electric kettle, a microwave, cookware and cutlery, a fridge, a water dispenser, heating and cooling, an air purifier and Wi-Fi. For the dog there are toilet sheets, paw wipes, a body towel, deodorising spray, a pet bin, waste bags, a crate for two, food bowls, a paw-washing station and a pet camera. Two dogs per person are included in the room rate, and 3,300 yen is charged for each dog beyond that; the limit per unit is four small dogs (under 10 kg), three medium (10–20 kg) or two large (over 20 kg).

Hot spring: a private natural spring in every unit

Every unit has its own natural hot spring bath. The water is a dark brown sodium bicarbonate spring drawn from 600 m below ground; the property describes it as having a slight viscosity and leaving the skin soft afterwards. Because it is private to each unit rather than a communal bath, there is no need to leave the dog alone in the room to use it.

Dining: in the room, on the terrace, or at the restaurant

Three options. A creative menu served in the room, a barbecue on the private terrace, or a kaiseki course at the restaurant in a historic building on the grounds. The property notes that using the restaurant means leaving the dog in the room. There is also a dog cafe on site, with terrace seating where dogs are welcome.

From the editors

The restaurant course is the one option that separates you from the dog. To avoid that, eat in the room or take the barbecue on the terrace.

I’ve had the pleasure of visiting Resol no Mori twice—once with my family and once with my boyfriend—and both experiences were nothing short of magical. One of the highlights was the stargazing; the night sky was breathtaking, and the fresh air made it even more enjoyable. The peacefulness of the surroundings truly allowed us to unwind and appreciate the beauty around us. I particularly loved the campfire right at the door. It created such a welcoming atmosphere, and making s’mores was a delightful way to spend the evening. The onsen was another standout feature, offering a relaxing soak with stunning views. The building itself is aesthetically appealing, enhancing the overall experience of tranquility. Our glamping accommodations were spotless and beautifully designed, providing the perfect blend of comfort and nature. Plus, we were greeted by several friendly cats enjoying the sun, which added a charming touch to our stay. Visiting in November was a treat, as the red leaves painted the landscape in stunning colors. Being far from the hustle and bustle of busy towns felt like stepping into a fairytale, making it an incredibly relaxing getaway. The food at the restaurant and during our BBQ was of excellent quality, satisfying our appetites after a day of exploring. The sports center is expansive, equipped with numerous facilities that make it a fantastic place for a retreat to reset and recharge. Overall, Resol no Mori is a hidden gem that offers a perfect blend of relaxation, adventure, and natural beauty. Highly recommend it for anyone looking to escape and enjoy a peaceful retreat!
