Overview

About this hotel

A hotel facing the sea at Nanki-Shirahama. It is all-inclusive: the rate covers breakfast and dinner, drinks through the stay including alcohol at the bar, use of the public bath, use of the hot spring pool, and parking, with some paid options alongside. There are 18 rooms across three buildings, and each room carries work by a different artist. The public bath uses spring water drawn from 1,000 m down with nothing added to it — a clear sodium bicarbonate-chloride spring. The heated hot spring pool, which the hotel says is the first of its kind in Nanki-Shirahama, is divided at depths of 120, 80 and 20 cm and can be used both before check-in and after check-out. A free shuttle runs from the airport and from JR Shirahama Station.

Who it suits

A stay that stays inside the price. Meals, drinks, the bath, the pool and the parking are all in the rate, so there are no decisions to make once you arrive. Because the pool is open before check-in and after check-out, an early arrival or a departure day still has something to do. All 18 rooms carry work by a different artist, which changes with the building and the room number. The loan cupboard runs to a cot, a bed rail, a baby bath seat, a nappy bin and a step stool, so travelling with a small child has been thought about. The public bath, however, asks guests with tattoos of any size not to use it. Getting about is covered by the free shuttle from the airport and the station.

Features

What this place is like

Checked against the hotel’s own site. Anything we could not confirm is left out — that does not mean it is not there.

Rooms: 18, each with a different artist

There are 18 rooms across three buildings, and each carries work by a different artist, assigned by building and room number. The art programme involves Fujimoto Akira, a graduate of Tokyo University of the Arts who runs an art project using the gaps in cities. Check-in is done on a tablet from a sofa facing the Pacific. Items for loan include a hair iron, an iron, playing cards and swim rings, along with a baby rocker, a cot, a bed rail, a nappy bin, a step stool and a baby bath seat, in limited numbers.

Hot spring: drawn from 1,000 m down, nothing added

The public bath uses spring water drilled from 1,000 m below ground with nothing added, run on a combination of flow-through and partial filtration. It is a clear sodium bicarbonate-chloride spring, listed for cuts, peripheral nerve disorders, poor circulation, dry skin and low mood. The open-air bath looks onto the trees and hills. It is open 6:00–10:00 and 15:00–24:00, with last entry at 23:30. Bath and skincare products are by THANN. Guests with tattoos of any size are asked not to use it.

From the editors

With a tattoo, the public bath is not available under the hotel’s policy. The hot spring pool is used in swimwear, and is governed separately.

Pool: heated with spring water, and open around the stay

The hotel describes its heated hot spring pool as the first in Nanki-Shirahama. It is divided at depths of 120, 80 and 20 cm, so adults and children can both use it. It is open 8:00–20:00, varying with the season, and can be used before check-in and after check-out; tell the front desk when you want to. Use is included in the rate.

Getting there: a free shuttle from the airport and the station

A free car runs between the hotel and either the airport or JR Shirahama Station, about ten minutes from the station. By train it is about 150 minutes from Shin-Osaka by limited express. By air it is about 60 minutes from Haneda to Nanki-Shirahama, with three return flights a day, or about two hours 15 minutes from Kansai International via Hineno to Shirahama. By car it is about two and a half hours from Osaka, then about 20 minutes and 14 km on Route 42 from the Nanki-Tanabe interchange. There are 23 free spaces on site with EV charging, and parking is included in the rate.

I stayed for two night with my family. The room was spacious and the direct access to the heated pool was very usuful, especially because we avoided the cold wind getting in and out of the water. From the airport pick up to the very last minute the staff made us feel cared for, but not too pushy so, we had a very at home experience. All the staff, interacted with my child and accommodated her needs willingly. Shout out to our waiter Yon-san that was very friendly, gave us good advice and entertained us during our meals. Our room didn't have an ocean view, but the lounge did and was empty most of the time. We could enjoy a small walk on the beach in front of the hotel. The food was excellent, locally sourced and regional and we looked forward to it at every meal! This was one of the best trip we had and we will be back soon!

Loved our pool side villa which gave us direct access to the pool from our balcony. Our kids had such a wonderful time swimming and sunbathing. Food and service were superb. Free flow of drinks and snacks at the bar, including a large variety of sake, whiskey, beer, wine and nonalcoholic beverages.
