Overview

About this hotel

A ryokan of 12 rooms at Miyahama Onsen, across the water from Miyajima. The rooms are spread through a garden of about 1,500 tsubo and fall into three kinds: rooms in the main house, detached rooms and separate pavilions. Every room has its own bath, open-air or semi-open-air among them. Dinner is served in your room and breakfast in the dining hall. It holds two Michelin Keys in the Michelin Guide 2026.

Who it suits

A stay for the garden and the rooms themselves. The three kinds of room are clearly different, so how you choose changes the stay: the main-house rooms look out over the strait toward Miyajima, the detached rooms open onto the garden, and the pavilions are small buildings of their own. Some rooms do not face the sea. With a bath in every room and dinner in your room you need not walk the grounds at all, though there are five salons if you want to.

What this place is like

Checked against the hotel’s own site. Anything we could not confirm is left out — that does not mean it is not there.

Rooms: 12, split between the main house, cottages and garden pavilions

There are 12 rooms for up to 40 guests. Three in the main house look out over the strait to Miyajima. Seven are detached cottages facing the garden. Two are azumaya — small free-standing garden pavilions. One of those, Kochuan, sits under the cherry trees at the western edge of the garden: 50 sqm for one or two, with an eight-mat main room and a six-mat bedroom downstairs, a bath in a small annexe reached by a covered walkway, and a living room upstairs among the branches. Every room has its own bath, of differing kinds — open-air, half-open-air and others. All rooms have a washlet and underfloor heating beneath the tatami. Amenities are by Marks & Web and Chanel. Wireless internet does not reach every room.

From the editors

For a sea view, that means the three rooms in the main house. Seizan among the cottages and Kochuan among the pavilions have no sea view, looking instead to the hills and the garden. The conditions change room by room, so check by name before booking.

Hot spring: a weak radioactive spring, with a bath in every room

The water is a simple weak radioactive spring, classed as hypotonic and alkaline, listed for neuralgia, muscle and joint pain, frozen shoulder, chronic digestive complaints, fatigue and chronic gynaecological conditions. Every room has its own bath, in differing forms. There is also a salon with a private bath attached, and spa treatments are offered in one of the garden pavilions.

Dining: dinner in the room, breakfast in the hall

Dinner is served in the room and breakfast in the hall. Low tables and floor seating can be changed for a table and chairs. For drinks there are wine and local sake pairings, and also a non-alcoholic pairing put together by the head chef and the sommelier.

The garden and its salons

The rooms are scattered through about 5,000 square metres of garden. Inside there is a library, two salons, a tea salon, a salon under the floor, a salon with a private bath, a hall, a lounge and a shop. The inn states that it was placed eighth in a ranking of Japanese gardens chosen by specialists from around the world, from about a thousand candidates including inns and former villas. In its announcement of 18 September 2026, the Michelin Guide listed Sekitei with two Michelin Keys.

we stayed 1 night in the Basho room in late May. the ryokan has a traditional japanese aesthetic, the interior and furniture was well-maintained and looked fresh despite feeling like i was transported back in time. we enjoyed walking through the garden, taking pictures, bathing in the public onsen (it was slightly small), and the complimentary sake tasting of regional sake in the lounge. as a sake enjoyer, it was a lot of fun. the lounge felt slightly small and probably wouldn’t fit everyone if they were fully booked and everyone came at the same time. our room had a dining room, veranda overlooking the garden and Seto sea, hot bath (not onsen) and bedroom. Everything was well-furnished, there was a CD player with a collection (we enjoyed Mozart with our kaiseki), and cute little corners like a study and make-up area. i had never had in-room dining in a ryokan and did not know what to expect. however, the aesthetic of the dining room and the flawless service made it feel like i was dining in a kaiseki restaurant. the meal itself was legendary and easily my favourite of the trip. the table was set with a poem about the beauty of the seasons. we were provided with the dinner menu which we greatly appreciated was in both Japanese and English. it started with a poem about the rainy spring season we were experiencing. overall, without writing an essay, it felt like each element in each dish was perfectly and carefully cooked. the plating was also very thoughtfully and beautifully arranged (on equally beautiful plateware). the most amazing course would be the hassun, which was arranged to reflect the rainy spring: - champagne jelly with popping candy to mimic the sound of falling rain - fava bean decorated to look like a frog - sayori rolled to look like a snail - prawn on a stick to look like an umbrella together with the poems, it really added to the romanticism of the meal. although so much effort was spent on the plating, the kitchen didn’t skimp any effort on the execution and flavour as each item was delicious. other special mentions of the meal: - appetiser: anago 3 ways. we had a ton of anago this trip but 2 of the preparations were new to us and unique - wanmono: first time trying renkon manjyu, the texture was interesting and was enjoyable to eat. the ankake was light yet flavourful - sashimi: first time having ise ebi! the isaki was also unreal but really, every dish was top notch. we topped up for the dinner and sake pairing. the various sake went great with the food and the pour was generous. my favourite was probably the first one which was a sparkling sake. the sommelier was friendly in sharing about the sake. i can only wonder about the wine pairing. after the meal, we were full and satisfied and only had to walk a few steps to enjoy and unwind in the hot bath. next day’s breakfast was in a common dining area. the meal was also extremely generous and we were well-fed before checking out for our Miyajima day trip. while the price for a night’s stay is steep even for ryokan, the combination of the beautiful garden, Seto sea view, aesthetically pleasing interior, amazing kaiseki and great service made it a unique experience.

Unbelievable service and quality. We had a lot of dietary needs because of pregnancy and the staff were incredible at providing an amazing meal and adapting to change. The garden and spa are incredible, the private baths are so lovely.

This was my second stay at Sekitei in just over 6 months. After having the chance to return to Japan for a wedding, I went out of my way to book a 4-hour Shinkansen ride through Hiroshima just for the chance to stay here once more - it's that amazing. If you're interested in natural beauty and beautiful facilities, Sekitei should be on your bucket list.
