About this hotel
An inn of detached cottages on a country lane at Kawakami in Yufuin. There are 14 rooms in 13 buildings, every one of them detached, and each has its own hot spring bath — an indoor one and a half-open-air one. The cottages differ in character and are named after plants: Karin mixes Japanese and Western, Sazanka is a Western room in dark tones, Yamamomo runs a tatami room, a living room and a bedroom together. The lobby is finished in plaster and stone with layered beams and a fireplace, and there is a foot bath among the trees in the garden. Dinner is a creative kaiseki served in the dining room at 18:00 or 19:00, by reservation only. Five minutes on foot from the Yunotsubo shopping street.
Who it suits
Every cottage is detached and has its own hot spring bath, so there is no walk to a communal one. Layouts and capacities differ: Sazanka suits one or two, while Yamamomo runs to four with its tatami room and bedroom joined. All rooms are non-smoking. Dinner must be booked by the day before and is set at either 18:00 or 19:00, so it is worth arranging your arrival around it; breakfast is built from Yufuin produce. The Yunotsubo street is five minutes away, but the inn itself is on the quiet country side, which makes it easy to combine walking the town with staying in. The foot bath in the garden is there for after the walk.

There are 14 rooms across 13 buildings, all of them detached, and each has its own hot spring bath: one indoors and one half-open to the air. Karin mixes Japanese and Western in pale timber and plaster, takes one to four, and runs a living room into a bedroom, with Mount Yufu in view from the veranda and the indoor bath. Sazanka is a Western room in dark tones for one or two, with the garden in view from the bath. Yamamomo joins a raised tatami area, a living room and a bedroom, and takes one to four. All are non-smoking, with Wi-Fi, a washlet, individual climate control and a safe.

Dining: a set start at 18:00 or 19:00, by reservation only
Dinner is a creative kaiseki served in the dining room, a space of heavy beams, plaster walls, a stone floor and a fireplace, on Arita porcelain and glassware made by craftsmen in Toyama. There are two sittings, at 18:00 and 19:00, by reservation only, which must be made by the day before. Allergies are accommodated as far as possible if given at the time of booking. Breakfast looks onto the garden and is almost entirely local: vegetables from nearby growers, bread baked that morning.

The grounds: a foot bath in the garden, a fire in the lobby
The lobby is plaster walls, a stone floor and layered ceiling beams, with a fireplace; the front desk also sells a few goods. The garden changes through the seasons and has a foot bath set among the trees, which in autumn looks into the colour. Each cottage looks onto the garden as well.

I felt like a King! Absolutely best experience of private onsen including top service, welcoming staff, dinner and breakfast.

While the menu indicated "grilled oita beef", what was served was some braised sliced beef, which is not an indication of item in menu. Felt deceived. Value aside, its not ethical. I have stayed in other ryokan in yufuni. While place was smaller and less luxurious. The food served was more refined and tastier. Personally, The food in Bettei Itsuki had no wow factor despite high price and 5 stars reviews.
Read the full review on Google MapsBettei Itsuki truly exceeded my expectations. Room: The accommodation was spacious, impeccably clean, and equipped with comfortable beds. The highlight was undoubtedly the two private onsens for the Yamabuki cottage. While the indoor bath was excellent, the outdoor onsen—set in a rustic hut—was a delightful surprise, atmospheric and memorable. Cuisine: Both dinner and breakfast were outstanding. Dinner was served kaiseki style, beautifully presented with portions that felt just right. Breakfast was equally thoughtful, with generous servings that left me satisfied. Service: The staff struck the perfect balance of friendliness and attentiveness, offering just the right amount of guidance. As a solo traveler, I appreciated how welcome they made me feel, especially since many onsen ryokans primarily cater to couples or groups. I was so impressed. This is a place I would gladly return to on any future visit to Yufuin.
