About this hotel
An eight-room inn at Senbon Matsubara in Numazu, Shizuoka. It began in 1913, when Miwa Zenbei — head of the Mitsuwa soap company and a student of tea — built a sukiya-style teahouse in about 10,000 square metres of garden, meaning to hold tea gatherings for a thousand people. Inside it are a three-mat tea room moved here from Kyoto and rooms in a mixed Japanese and Western style. In 2006 a residential wing was added, designed by the architect Watanabe Akira: rammed-earth walls layered from the sand and soil of the Fuji river, a roof of Yoshino cedar laid almost unworked, and a water basin fed by Fuji spring water. Every room looks onto the pine grove and the basin. The spa draws its water from a well on the property, from the same Mount Fuji aquifer as the Kakitagawa springs. Dinner is a course of Chinese cooking supervised by Saito Hirofumi, a Sichuan specialist.
Who it suits
A stay for the buildings and the garden. There are only eight rooms, and they differ: Japanese rooms with futons, Western rooms with a balcony, and maisonettes that mix the two. The two superior balcony rooms, at 49 sqm, have an open-air bath on the balcony; the deluxe tatami room has a cypress bath indoors. The spa splits by floor — men on the first, women on the second — and runs 6:00–10:30 and 15:00–23:30, with an indoor bath, an open-air artificial hot spring, a stone sauna laid with Austrian Badgastein ore, and three saunas: one with self-service loyly downstairs and two at different temperatures upstairs. Treatments are supervised by uka and must be booked. Dinner is served in the 1913 teahouse, so the meal doubles as time spent inside the building.

What this place is like
Checked against the hotel’s own site. Anything we could not confirm is left out — that does not mean it is not there.
Rooms: eight, in three characters
There are eight rooms: Japanese rooms where you sleep on futons, Western rooms with a wide balcony, and maisonettes that mix the two. All of them look onto the pine grove and the basin fed by Fuji spring water. The two superior balcony rooms take one or two guests in 49 sqm, of which 14 is balcony; they are on the second floor, with a queen bed and an open-air bath set into one end of a balcony facing the pines. The deluxe tatami room pairs an open living area with a tatami sleeping space and a cypress bath indoors. The wing was designed in 2006 by Watanabe Akira, with rammed-earth walls layered from the sand and soil of the Fuji river and a roof of Yoshino cedar laid almost unworked.

Spa: split by floor, with three saunas
The spa uses water drawn from a well on the property, from the same Mount Fuji aquifer as the Kakitagawa springs. Besides the indoor bath there is an open-air artificial hot spring using komyoseki stone, a stone sauna room and dry saunas. The stone sauna is laid throughout with natural Badgastein ore quarried in Austria. There is one sauna with self-service loyly on the first floor and two more at different temperatures on the second. It is open 6:00–10:30 and 15:00–23:30, with the first floor for men and the second for women. Treatments are supervised by uka and are by reservation.
From the editors
Because the floors are split by sex, you and your companion cannot use the same facilities at the same time, and the number and temperature of the saunas differ between the two.

Dining: a Chinese-based course, in the 1913 teahouse
Meals are served in the sukiya-style teahouse built in 1913, whose rooms include a three-mat tea room moved here from Kyoto and a mixed Japanese and Western sitting room. The cooking is supervised by Saito Hirofumi, who has roots in the same prefecture; it is a course built on Chinese cooking. Saito specialises in Sichuan food and runs a restaurant in Kamakura where he works to a theme of taking dishes apart and rebuilding them. The kitchen uses fish from Suruga Bay and the waters off Izu, with local produce through the seasons.

About two years ago, during a short business trip to Tokyo, I decided to spend a weekend visiting Numazu and instantly fell in love with the area. My stay at Numazu Club was a big part of that impression, and it remains one of the most memorable hotel experiences I’ve had. The property itself is registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan. The historic buildings, traditional Japanese garden, wabi-sabi–style water basin, and carefully maintained greenery all create a peaceful atmosphere that feels like a hidden retreat away from the busy world. The room was extremely relaxing. I especially loved the open-air bath, and sitting on the balcony while looking out over the lush greenery was wonderfully calming. Both dinner and breakfast feature Japanese-style Chinese cuisine, with every dish beautifully presented and full of flavor. Would definitely love to visit again!
Read the full review on Google MapsBeautifully designed facility, calm, comfortable and relaxing. Enjoyed the setting, the sound of the sea, view of Fuji san from our room. Restaurant and wine list was pleasant surprise, the quality/value. Friendly, competent staff. Will visit again our travels. Wholeheartedly recommend.
Read the full review on Google MapsTruly authentic venue in the impressive set ups. While visiting, I could not help considering how traditional Japanese lived so close to the nature and how pragmatic they were as a minimalist .... a hidden gem! Thank you for your great hospitality too from the current generation of Japanese!
