Overview

About this hotel

A hotel in Kita-Aoyama, Tokyo, on the site of the former Bell Commons building. The rooms are done in mid-century modern throughout and are generously sized: 32 sqm for a standard, 39–41 for a superior, 46–48 for a deluxe, 51 for the two-room premium twin and 56–61 for a suite. There is a gym and shower room for guests only. Eating and drinking covers a lot of ground: an all-day dining room, a Japanese counter, an Italian restaurant and a rooftop bar on the top floor, an Edomae sushi counter, and a lunch-only tonkatsu room supervised by Kuroki Jun of the Tokyo restaurant Kurogi. Three minutes on foot from exit 3 of Gaienmae Station on the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line.

Who it suits

A hotel you can choose for what is inside it. Japanese, Italian, sushi, tonkatsu and a rooftop bar are all here, and people who are not staying come in for them too. Even the smallest room is 32 sqm, and for a longer stay there is the deluxe at 46–48 or the premium twin at 51 with its living room separated. Gaienmae is three minutes away and Omotesando eight, so this is a base for walking Aoyama and Omotesando. Parking cannot be reserved and costs 5,000 yen a night for guests. The afternoon tea is built around the crepes of Harajuku, which makes plain how much the building is themed on Tokyo in the 1970s.

Dining: Japanese, Italian, sushi, tonkatsu and a rooftop bar

There are six places to eat and drink. The all-day dining room has a terrace and an open kitchen and runs from breakfast through to the bar hours. The Japanese counter works with the seasons. The tonkatsu room is lunch-only and supervised by Kuroki Jun of the Tokyo restaurant Kurogi. On the top floor are an Italian restaurant working with seasonal produce and a botanical rooftop bar. There is also an Edomae sushi counter. The afternoon tea takes the crepes of Harajuku as its subject, with crepes and madeleines baked to order.

Getting there: three minutes from Gaienmae, and no parking reservations

Three minutes on foot from exit 3 of Gaienmae Station on the Ginza Line, or eight from exit A3 of Omotesando, which is served by the Chiyoda, Hanzomon and Ginza lines. By car it is about ten minutes from either the Gaien exit of the Shinjuku expressway route or the Takagicho exit of the Shibuya route. Parking cannot be reserved: 5,000 yen a night for guests, or up to three hours for 3,000 yen for restaurant customers, with 1,000 yen off for every 10,000 yen spent. From Haneda and Narita the hotel routes guests via Tokyo Station and then the subway or a taxi.
