Overview

About this hotel

The first city address for FUFU, which built its name in hot spring towns. It stands in Ginza 1-chome and still pipes hot spring water to the rooms. The building is made to shut out the street, given over entirely to holding on to quiet in the middle of the city.

Who it suits

A city ryokan for staying in: the bath in your room, and the building. Ginza and Kyobashi are walkable, so a stay can be slotted around shopping or a dinner. It suits wanting hours of doing nothing without spending any of them travelling.

What this place is like

Checked against the hotel’s own site. Anything we could not confirm is left out — that does not mean it is not there.

Hot spring: water brought from Atami, in the bath in your room

Every room is plumbed with natural hot spring water. The source is Atami Onsen No. 47, a calcium-sodium sulphate-chloride spring, and the water is colourless. The room pages describe the bath as an indoor one finished in hinoki and tile, and the hot spring page says it is a space where you feel the outside air.

From the editors

There is no communal bath; the water is used in the bath in your room. The hotel states plainly that the spring is not under the building — the water is brought from Atami.

Food: Japanese on the 12th floor, sushi one floor below ground

Ginza Gayu serves Japanese food on the 12th floor, and Ginga serves sushi on the first basement level as a course that crosses sushi with Japanese cooking. Rooms on the 10th and 11th floors that carry the word Executive let you choose between eating in your room and eating in the restaurant.

Roof: a lounge with a foot bath fed by the Atami water

The rooftop lounge, Yusora, has a foot bath using the same natural hot spring water brought from Atami. It is for hotel guests only from 07:00 to 19:00, with free-flow drinks between 16:00 and 18:00. From 19:00 to 22:00 (last orders 21:30) it becomes a rooftop bar open to people who are not staying.

From the editors

The hours are split between guests only and open to all. If you want it quiet, that means before seven in the evening.

I arrived at Hotel Tokyo at 11:30 with no greeting or luggage assistance from staff, and had to rely on my taxi driver for help. The entrance is hidden among buildings and very hard to find without directions. After leaving our passports for early pre-check-in and returning at 3 PM, we had to redo the whole process again, which felt inefficient. The room was a highlight: clean, well-equipped with skincare amenities, and the private in-room onsen was great. Unfortunately, service was inconsistent. There was extra staffing during breakfast, yet turndown service was not completed for our room. Service improved slightly on day two. While our luggage was brought down for check-out, staff did not help flag our arriving taxi, forcing us to wave the driver over ourselves. I expect more proactive assistance at a luxury hotel. A lovely room, but service needs to be more reliable and attentive.

Decently spacious (for Japan standard) and modern rooms with its own onsen (water brought over from Atami). The foot bath on the roof is a bit gimmicky otherwise. Service was slow. From room service to concierge, everyone worked on snail pace. We arrived 20 min before check in time and “the room wasn’t ready”. VERY GENEROUS of them to allow us to go to our room exactly 5 minutes before check in time 👏 guess economy is bad for them Definitely prefer Hoshinoya with more soul and helpful service.

Probably a great hotel for Japanese guests who are used to Ryokan’s, but will be a culture shock for Westerners. Lots and lots of rules (unlike typical hotels) and a service culture that leads with “no” instead of “yes.” The hotel is beautiful and serene in a great location, but those that are used to the service of high end western hotels will find this place highly lacking and strange. The spring water hot tub in each room is really nice and the minimalist decorations are well done. This said, if you are using this hotel as your based to explore Tokyo, you will find the service lacking—especially when the Peninsula, Four Seasons and Palace are close by and have great Western style service.
