Overview

About this hotel

A tower ryokan in Otemachi, two floors below ground and seventeen above. You take off your shoes at the entrance and walk tatami corridors to your room, a layout carried through the whole building. All 84 rooms sit six to a floor around a shared ochanoma lounge. On the top floor is an open-air bath fed by the Otemachi hot spring, drawn from 1,500 metres below ground.

Who it suits

Because you live shoeless on tatami, it suits a stay spent inside the building with your luggage unpacked. Rooms take at most three people, and only children under 12 may share a bed, so it does not suit larger groups. Check-out is at noon, which leaves the morning unhurried.

What this place is like

Checked against the hotel’s own site. Anything we could not confirm is left out — that does not mean it is not there.

Rooms: three types, and how to choose

Rooms come in three types: Kiku, Sakura Twin and Yuri Double. Kiku is a corner suite facing south, 83 sqm for up to three people, with one on each floor. Sakura and Yuri are the standard rooms — Sakura a twin of 41–47 sqm, Yuri a king of 41–49 sqm, both for two. Yuri has a tatami sofa set at the height you sit at on the floor. Every room opens onto the ochanoma lounge on its floor across continuous tatami.

From the editors

If there are three of you, Kiku is the only option. Sakura and Yuri differ in the bed — a twin or a single king. Rooms with the same name vary in size depending on the floor.

Hot spring: the Otemachi onsen on the top floor

A natural hot spring drawn from 1,500 metres below ground. It is what remains of a sea that once covered this ground, and the water is described as strongly saline, rich in minerals from seawater and seaweed. A cave-like indoor bath leads to an open-air bath, where you soak looking up at the piece of Tokyo sky the building leaves open. The spa is on the same top floor.

From the editors

We could not find the bathing hours or any age limit on the hotel’s own site. Worth asking when you book.

Ochanoma lounge: not the same thing as a club lounge

Each floor holds only six rooms, with an ochanoma lounge at its centre — a shared sitting room, open around the clock to the guests on that floor only, connected to the rooms across continuous tatami. No reservation, no charge, and every guest has one. There is no dress code; you can sit there in what you are wearing in your room. Through the day it offers a sencha tasting from 15:00 to 16:30, caffeine-free drinks from 20:30 to 22:00, and letter-writing on Edo washi paper from 8:00 to 12:00.

From the editors

A club lounge is usually one room in the building, opened to higher room categories or higher-tier members. The ochanoma lounge is for every guest, sits on every floor, and is open 24 hours. There is no lounge-access rate to look for.

Food: breakfast is Japanese or Western

There are three places to eat in the building: the dining room on B1 (a course that traces Japanese home cooking), the sushi counter Otemon, and dinner served in your room or as in-room dining. For breakfast you choose Japanese or Western. The Japanese one centres on grilled fish and small seasonal dishes, the Western one on scrambled eggs.

From the editors

We could not confirm on the hotel’s own site whether breakfast is included in the rate, or what it currently costs. A stay recorded in December 2022 describes breakfast as served in the room by default, with the dining room used for dinner only.

Getting there: from Tokyo Station and Otemachi Station

Ten minutes on foot (850 m) from the Marunouchi North exit of JR Tokyo Station. From Otemachi subway station, exit A1 on the Marunouchi line, exit C1 on the others. Twenty minutes by car or forty by train from Haneda Airport; sixty by car or seventy by train from Narita. By car, use the underground car park of Otemachi Financial City Grand Cube, where the drop-off is on B2. Parking is ¥300 per 30 minutes from 7:00 to 22:00, or ¥5,500 per night until noon the next day, tax included. There is no shuttle.

This is far and away the loveliest hotel I've ever stayed at. Possibly not saying much, as this was a special occasion and we were splashing out, but I am so glad I picked Hoshinoya. The people were wonderful - kind and helpful and cheerful. The rooms were so comfortable and really big. The additional of the open air onsen on the top floor was such a treat. I actually loved the vibe as well - tatami flooring and taking your shoes off to come I to the hotel. It made for such a peaceful and welcoming atmosphere. Thank you to everyone there who took care of us. It was wonderful.

Second luxury hotel experience in Japan and it was definitely amazing. Stayed three nights and added Japanese, Western breakfasts, also experience the rooftop helipad morning experience. My experience here has been amazing. The luxury experience was definitely a treat. From atmosphere, to hospitality, excursions, food, this luxury hotel did not fall short. As a foreigner and my third visit to Japan, if you are looking for a luxury hotel I highly recommend giving this a try. Mind you, I didn’t expect daily turn over service, refills etc. Future plans, I do plan on checking out their other locations around Japan.

Amazing place . Beautiful hotel well appointed. Staff is amazing. It is so clean and nice and relaxing. They have little Lounge areas on every floor. They play classic japanese music at the entrance. They have a hot spring on the top floor. They give you kimonos to use. I would have recommend this place 100% and come here over and over again. Toilets are great too. I don't see how anybody can give this place less than 5 stars. They even have fragranced origami you can mail to loved ones.
