Overview

About this hotel

On high ground at Izusan in Atami, with every room facing the sea. Each has an open-air hot spring bath turned towards the water, and the view runs out towards Hatsushima. It keeps the number of rooms low.

Who it suits

A stay whose point is the time spent in the bath looking at the sea. It is a short journey from Tokyo, so even one night leaves real time here. Stay reports read very differently around the fireworks season.

What this place is like

Checked against the hotel’s own site. Anything we could not confirm is left out — that does not mean it is not there.

Hot spring: a free-flowing open-air hot-spring bath in every room, plus a communal bath

Every room has an open-air bath overlooking the Pacific, fed directly from the Izusan hot spring with no recirculation. There is also a communal bath, Komyo no Yu, on the ground floor of the Sekaie wing.

Dinner: depends on the wing — Japanese in Sekaie, meat in Tsuki no Michi

Dinner depends on the wing you book. The Sekaie wing eats at Tsukushi, a Japanese restaurant whose menu changes monthly; the Tsuki no Michi wing eats at 1SHIO (Hitoshio), a meat restaurant. The exception is the Penthouse Tsuki no Michi on the top floor, which has its own kitchen and a private chef. Tsukushi can also serve a halal kaiseki.

Getting there: pick-up from Atami Station (book ahead)

The inn collects guests from Atami Station in its own car (book ahead); if the car is full, it sends a taxi instead. From Tokyo Station it is about an hour to Atami by shinkansen.

Absolutely incredible, the service was excellent, the private onsen, room and meals were fantastic. They were extremely accommodating to English speaking guests who were having their first experience with a stay like this. Cannot recommend enough, plus the city of Atami is so charming and a welcome place of rest on our travels through Japan.

An amazing experience. The staff was very kind and accommodating. The food was excellent and made with such care. The conditioning program had a gifted healer and the best massage I have ever had. Thank you Atami Sekai 💕

Super friendly and attentive staff. The hospitality was beyond our expectations. They were doing their best to communicate with us in English. Room was immaculately clean. Balcony onsen was enjoyable. Would definitely stay here again in the future.
