Overview

About this hotel

An inn in the woods at Kowakudani in Hakone, built around a bar. The bar is the first thing inside the entrance, and the rooms are arranged around it. Check-in is at 18:00, and guests are met at the bar counter with a welcome drink; the bar’s standard drinks list is included in the room rate, with some items charged. There are three baths: one facing the mountains, one with a cypress tub, and a private one where you can drink while you soak, with windows that open to make it half open-air. In the morning there is a champagne brunch in a lounge lit from above. Mount Sengen and Mount Myojogatake are in view from the building, and at the foot of the hill the Chisuji falls spread down about 20 metres of mossy rock. Five minutes on foot from the Horaien bus stop.

Who it suits

A hotel for the evening. Check-in is late, at 18:00, and check-out is at 14:00, so the shape of the stay is a day in Hakone and then arrival. The bar’s standard drinks are in the rate and it is built so that no one is watching the clock — which also means most of what you are paying for does not apply if you do not drink. Even the bathing is arranged around it, with a private bath where drinks can be brought in. The morning is a champagne brunch in the lounge. A shuttle runs between 17:00 and 19:20. The nearest stop is Horaien, about 40 minutes by bus from Odawara or 20 from Hakone-Yumoto.

Features

What this place is like

Checked against the hotel’s own site. Anything we could not confirm is left out — that does not mean it is not there.

The bar: standard drinks are in the rate

Inside the entrance is the bar, with a timber counter and a dark blue fireplace, and the rooms are arranged around it. Check-in is at 18:00, and guests are met at the counter with a welcome drink. The bar’s standard list is included in the room rate, with some items charged, and it pours selected spirits and cocktails. The place is set up so that no one needs to watch the hour: the bar, the lounge and the rooms are all open to you. In the morning the lounge, lit through a skylight, serves a champagne brunch against a panorama of the Hakone mountains.

Baths: three of them, one private and set up for a drink

There are three. One looks out to the mountains, one has a cypress tub, and the third is private and arranged so that a drink can come in with you; opening its windows makes it half open-air. From the building, Mount Sengen and Mount Myojogatake stand in view with nothing in the way.

Getting there: five minutes from the Horaien stop

The nearest stop is Horaien, served by the Hakone Tozan and Izuhakone buses, about five minutes away on foot. From Tokyo Station it is about 40 minutes to Odawara by shinkansen and then about 40 by bus; from Shinjuku about 90 minutes by Romancecar to Hakone-Yumoto and then about 20 by bus. Shin-Yokohama is about 15 minutes from Odawara by shinkansen, Nagoya about 70. A shuttle runs between 17:00 and 19:20. At the foot of the hill the Chisuji falls run down about 20 metres of mossy rock like a screen of threads.

We had the perfect night in Hakone celebrating here. The service is astute and the drinks were all fantastic. Highly recommend booking the private spa room if staying with a partner.

Great stay here, loved the drinks and onsen, big room and late checkout was great after making the most of the cocktails! Beautiful setting and scenery. Very attentive staff and always offered shuttles to the various places we were visiting which was a nice gesture.

A slightly unconventional but memorable stay in Hakone. Bar Hotel Hakone Kazan isn’t your typical hotel—it’s best understood as a “bar hotel.” With check-in at 6:00 PM and checkout at 2:00 PM, the entire experience is designed around slowing down, having a few drinks, and settling into the night. The dim lighting throughout the property might feel a bit disorienting at first, but it quickly starts to feel intentional—more like stepping into a lounge than a hotel. The all-inclusive (free-flow) selection of whiskey, spirits, and cocktails is a standout. You’ll find everything from classics to more modern, mixology-style drinks. That said, many cocktails lean noticeably sweet. If you’re used to the more spirit-forward, balanced profiles common in U.S. cocktail bars, you may find yourself wanting something a bit drier. The food, however, is a pleasant surprise—more substantial than typical bar fare and satisfying enough to replace a full dinner. There are two shared public baths that alternate between men and women. One is quite minimal, with just a single indoor tub of about 10 square meters (roughly 108 sq ft), while the other includes indoor and outdoor baths plus a sauna. The difference between the two is significant, and depending on timing, it can shape your overall experience. The rooms are where some trade-offs become more apparent. Sound insulation is limited, and hallway noise carries easily. In studio-style rooms, there’s no private bathroom (toilet or sink), which may feel inconvenient—especially at night. Doors are not auto-locking either, so you’ll need to remember to lock up each time you leave. The property overall feels like a converted retreat or lodge, and while the concept is compelling, the layout and flow could be better optimized.
