Beautiful establishment that is conveniently located on the cable car route. The staff were incredibly kind and helpful, and the chef graciously accommodated requests for western breakfasts and some adjustments to the kaiseki meals. Our server was amazing (unfortunately didn’t grab her name) but explained every dish to us in English, and took care of us throughout. You really get the feeling that they want to do everything in their power to make your stay great. The view from the room is just magnificent.

After the hustle and bustle of Tokyo, we wanted to unwind and relax and experience the Ryokan culture of Japan and we couldn’t have picked a better place to do that than Gora Hanaougi. Firstly the arrival process couldn’t be easier. The hotel offers a pickup service from Gora Station but we took the cable car to souzan station - just outside of which Gora Hanaougi has a private horizontal/diagonal elevator that takes you down to their grounds. We were met by name, guided to the door, and checked in with a welcome drink and snack. Our room was lovely. We had a Japanese style room with a private onsen bath and a view over the mountain side, it was very calm and peaceful. I think the hotel was reasonably busy but we barely saw anyone there the whole time. The meals were an exquisite demonstration of kaiseki dining, with lots of interesting Japanese courses perfectly sized so you leave full but not overly so. The service though was what made it even better. We had the same server every time we dined, or left the hotel, called Miyu who was so attentive, polite and gave us the authentic Japanese experience. The baths were hot, relaxing and soothing. We did briefly try the public baths and found them lovely, but found the best views were from our balcony in the private baths. Final piece of slightly astounding service - every time we approached the front door to leave, by the time we got there our shoes were perfectly laid out ready for us. How they managed that without us needing to ask anyone I’ll never know.

There are several well-rated onsen hotels in the area, but I would have a hard time not coming back to this one! It was recommended to me by a co-worker and we stayed only one night. Expensive, yes, but I switched our reservation to a weekday, and it turned out to be a memorable, peaceful, and lovely experience. From the train station, we chose to hike up the hills in the hopes of finding the cable station with elevator, but were unlucky. However, it was a good physical challenge before our stay. We were greeted and accompanied by staff from the moment we stepped onto the property. Verbal guidance and requests were clear, and I thought there was a high level of communication between the staff. There seemed to be a lot of English-speaking guests - which the staff was well-equipped for - but I hope this hotel is also a destination for native Japanese, not just foreigners. At any rate, the onsen baths, amenities, instructions and notes in the room, were all clean, plentiful, and seemed authentic. The dinner and breakfast were very enjoyable, and my husband loved that each couple/group could be in their own space. For Westerners that asked for additional lobby drinks or questions about take-home room amenities, I was appreciative of their very tactful and respectful responses. My husband enjoys more of the city, but I absolutely relished this mountain getaway. The young lady who hosted our welcome lobby and room experience, and Miyu who took care of us during meals and departure, are definite gems! I hope they remain robustly in business so I can come back next time I visit Japan.
