About this hotel
A hotel on the shore of Lake Toya at Toyako Onsen, inside the Shikotsu-Toya National Park. There are 18 rooms: 16 standard rooms (11 deluxe twins, three deluxe doubles, one superior double and one executive twin) plus one Deluxe Suite and one Premium Suite. Every room faces the lake and every room has a bath fed continuously from the hot spring. The public bath looks out to the lake through a large window and has a reclining bath, a sauna and a cold bath. The water is a calcium-sodium sulphate spring (hypotonic, weakly alkaline, low temperature), reheated at source. To keep the place quiet, children under 12 are not accepted. About ten minutes from JR Toya Station by free shuttle.
Who it suits
A quiet stay for adults. Children under 12 are not accepted, so this is not a choice for a family with small children. At 18 rooms it is a small house, and since every room faces the lake and has its own hot spring bath, a stay built around not leaving the room works well here. Meals are by reservation only, and on stays of more than one night the full course changes from the night before. Allergies and ingredients you cannot eat must be given two days ahead; changes cannot be made on the day. The whole hotel is non-smoking, with one smoking area on the outdoor terrace on the ground floor. Because it sits inside a national park it cannot put up large signs, so enter the address into the car navigation if you are driving.

What this place is like
Checked against the hotel’s own site. Anything we could not confirm is left out — that does not mean it is not there.
Rooms: all 18 face the lake, each with a hot spring bath
There are 18 rooms. Sixteen are standard rooms — 11 deluxe twins, three deluxe doubles, one superior double and one executive twin — each furnished differently. To these are added one Deluxe Suite and one Premium Suite. The Deluxe Suite is a junior suite with a large stone bath, an accessible toilet and a shower booth. The Premium Suite includes a Japanese-style room, and the hotel describes it as among the largest suites in Hokkaido. Every room faces the lake, and every room has a bath fed continuously from the spring. Drinks in the fridge are free. Rooms have a coffee grinder, an electric kettle, a humidifying air purifier and a safe. All rooms are non-smoking; the smoking area is on the outdoor terrace on the ground floor.
From the editors
Since every room has its own hot spring bath, a stay that never uses the public bath still works. If steps and moving around are a concern, the Deluxe Suite is the one with an accessible toilet and a shower booth.

Hot spring: a sulphate-spring public bath, and one in every room
The source is called Lake Toya Onsen and is reheated at source. The water is a calcium-sodium sulphate spring, hypotonic, weakly alkaline and low temperature. The public bath takes in the lake through its large windows and has a large tub, a reclining bath, a sauna and a cold bath. There is also a dedicated shower booth for guests in a wheelchair or anyone who finds washing difficult. The bath in every guest room runs continuously from the spring.

Dining: reservation only, and the menu changes night to night
Meals are by reservation only. The kitchen works with vegetables from the fertile soil left by volcanic ash and pumice, branded Hokkaido meat and fish from the northern sea, built into a seasonal course. On stays of more than one night, the full course changes from the night before according to what is available that day. Allergies and ingredients you cannot eat must be given two days before, and changes requested on the day cannot be accommodated.

Getting there: a free shuttle from JR Toya Station
About ten minutes from JR Toya Station by free shuttle. From Sapporo it is about two hours by limited express, or about an hour and 45 minutes by car on the expressway from Sapporo-kita, then five minutes from the Abuta-Toyako exit. From New Chitose Airport it is about an hour and 20 minutes by car, or a change from the rapid airport train to the limited express. Because the hotel is inside the Shikotsu-Toya National Park it cannot put up large signs, and it asks drivers to enter the address into their car navigation.

I had a wonderful, very peaceful stay. The guest rooms were clean and situated in a fantastic location, the lobby was gorgeous, all necessary amenities were provided, and I was very satisfied with the meals.
Read the full review on Google MapsOne of our favourite locations. It was a shame we couldn't stay longer. Beautiful location, amazing food and service and an incredible room overlooking the Lake. Recommend having your own transport as it is a couple of kilometres out of town.
Read the full review on Google MapsWonderful place to stay in Lake Toya. Best if you have a car since it’s not in the city centre but in exchange you get to enjoy the breath taking views away from the crowds. Great staff and incredible Japanese breakfast.
