Overview

About this hotel

A Tsuruga Group resort at Jozankei Onsen, about 40 minutes by car from central Sapporo, with a free shuttle as well. The public bath, Mori Spa, is built high and wide with large windows, and has an open-air bath among the trees, a Finnish sauna where guests pour their own water on the stones, and a stone sauna reserved for women. Dining centres on a buffet with pizza and roasts from the oven; at dinner a plated hors d’oeuvre is brought to the table before the buffet. There is also a shabu-shabu course served in semi-private rooms. The building holds a lounge, a terrace, a small art gallery, a bar, a cigar room and a patisserie lab among other rooms. All guest rooms are non-smoking.

Who it suits

A hotel built so that you spend your time inside it — lounge, terrace, gallery, bar, cigar room, shop and a room for working, so there is always somewhere to sit. It also takes day visitors for the lunch buffet, the bath and treatments, so anyone expecting the building to themselves may find it busier than that. Dinner is mainly a buffet; for a course, the shabu-shabu is the alternative. It is one of the group’s no-cleaning properties: on stays of more than one night, rooms are not serviced on even-numbered nights and guests receive a 1,000-yen voucher for use in the hotel per room per night instead, with a normal clean every fifth night. Being close to Sapporo, it suits a hot spring trip without a long journey.

What this place is like

Checked against the hotel’s own site. Anything we could not confirm is left out — that does not mean it is not there.

Hot spring: Mori Spa, with a self-loyly sauna

Mori Spa is built with a high ceiling and large windows that let the light in, and the open-air bath sits among the trees. The sauna was rebuilt in December 2022 as a Finnish one where guests pour the water themselves. There is also a stone sauna reserved for women. The baths are open 11:30–2:00 and 5:00–9:30, with cleaning between 2:00 and 5:00; the sauna and the women’s stone sauna run 5:00–9:30 and 11:30–23:00. Bring a towel from your room.

Dining: a buffet, with a course as the alternative

The buffet puts out pizza straight from the oven, roasts and vegetable dishes across Japanese and Western cooking. At dinner, a seasonal hors d’oeuvre is brought to each table before the buffet begins. For a course instead, there is shabu-shabu with Hokkaido ingredients, served in semi-private rooms.

Inside: a lounge, a gallery, a bar and a cigar room

Inside there is a lounge, a terrace, a small art gallery, a room set up for working, a bar, a cigar room, a shop, a patisserie lab and a gallery of pillows to choose from. The hotel also takes day visitors, for the lunch buffet, the bath, treatments and a wine lunch. All guest rooms have been non-smoking since 1 April 2018, with smoking confined to designated areas, including for e-cigarettes and heated tobacco.

From the editors

Because day visitors come in, anyone after the quiet of a guests-only building will want to pick their moment.

The western Japanese style room is a bit outdated, however what I can’t accept most is the kettle, the dirtiest I have ever seen in all the hotels I have stayed in Japan. Though it was replaced after I rang reception desk, it was disappointing to start with. Then comes to dinner. We booked Crab Shabu Shabu, dining vibe is excellent, service and food has all g way to go. Apart from Crab legs, no other dish is made with crab. It comes with either Udon or Crab porridge. Udon is literally self cook in the shabushabu soup that tastes weird. Dessert is even rougher, vanilla ice cream with grape sorbet topping. Restaurant staff English is not good for basic communication. 2nd Strike. Highlight comes at Breakfast. It feels strange to pick 1-hour slot for a buffet breakfast, I read previous hotel comments about the time slot is to ensure all guests are well taken care. What’s annoying me most again is the food quality and service standard. We went 8.30 sharp, restaurant is only 10% occupied but almost every food plate is 75% empty. Nothing is getting refilled, seems it is an early bird game. Given the premium price you charge, I cannot agree with the service provided. The grand lobby is appealing, would appreciate if you could invest more in the details that matter most to guests.

Very good experience in this hotel with a very good onsen, and tasty buffet. The rooms are also very comfortable. The emplacement of the hotel is a bit deceptive, lacking activities in summer

My husband, friend, and I stayed here and we loved it. It was so relaxing and beautiful. The forest theme was very cute and calming. We all got massages which were amazing and the onsen was extremely relaxing.
