Overview

About this hotel

A classic hotel in Kyu-Karuizawa, in business since 1894. It began as Kameya, an inn on the Nakasendo road, and was rebuilt for foreign guests after the missionary Alexander Croft Shaw and others stayed there. The Alps Wing, which is the face of the hotel, dates from 1936 and was designed by Kume Gonkuro, who also built the Nikko Kanaya Hotel. It was listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2018, and reopened in 2024 after a full refurbishment for its 130th year. Guests stay in one of three wings: Alps, Atago or Usui.

Who it suits

A stay for the building itself, and for the history of Karuizawa. The three wings are different places: the Alps Wing keeps the mix of Japanese and Western design as it was, the Atago Wing has natural hot spring water in the bath of every room, and the Usui Wing is the one for the view of the woods. The Kyu-Karuizawa Ginza street and St. Paul Church are walkable, and a free shuttle runs from Karuizawa Station for guests.

Features

What this place is like

Checked against the hotel’s own site. Anything we could not confirm is left out — that does not mean it is not there.

Rooms: three wings, three different stays

There are three wings: Alps, Atago and Usui. The Alps Wing dates from 1936 and has received the hotel’s guests ever since; it carries the mix of Japanese and Western design the hotel is known for. The Atago Wing was rebuilt in the recent refurbishment, and every room there has natural hot spring water plumbed to its indoor bath. The Usui Wing is the one for the view of the woods, finished in earth tones.

From the editors

The hot spring bath in the room is the Atago Wing. If the age of the building is the point, that is the Alps Wing. Which wing you take decides what the stay is.

Getting there: a free shuttle from Karuizawa Station

A free shuttle runs between the hotel and the south exit of Karuizawa Station, near the taxi rank, for guests who have booked. The Kyu-Karuizawa Ginza shopping street, the Catholic Karuizawa St. Paul Church and the Karuizawa Shaw Memorial Chapel are all within walking distance.
