Overview

About this hotel

A hot-spring inn of just nine rooms on a rise at Yawatano in Izu Kogen, about eight minutes by car from Izukogen Station (with a transfer). Every room has an open-air bath with hot-spring water flowing straight from the source, and the inn looks down on the Sagami Sea. Mount Omuro and the Jogasaki coast are close. Dinners are kaiseki centred on Izu seafood, and the rooms are built almost like separate cottages.

Who it suits

Suits a stay at a small, nine-room inn, for the free-flowing open-air bath in your room and the view over the Sagami Sea. The cottage-like rooms make it easy to keep to yourselves.

What this place is like

Checked against the hotel’s own site. Anything we could not confirm is left out — that does not mean it is not there.

Hot spring: an ocean-view open-air bath, fed straight from the spring, in every room

All four room types — the special room, the corner suite, the second-floor twin and the ground-floor twin — have an open-air bath facing the sea, filled straight from the spring. Each bath is big enough for two, and the inn’s bath keeper adjusts the temperature to the day’s weather. The ground-floor twin, one room only, has its bath on a terrace of about 30 m².

Dining: both meals in private dining rooms; dinner is a choice of kaiseki courses

Both meals are served in Izumi, a set of private dining rooms with table seating. Dinner is a kaiseki course centred on Izu seafood; you choose between courses with different mains, such as kinmedai (splendid alfonsino) shabu-shabu or domestic beef grilled on lava stone. Breakfast centres on a tagine pot, with a choice of four kinds of dried fish.

Getting there: a shuttle from Izu-Kogen Station every 20 minutes, 14:20–17:00

About five minutes by car from Izu-Kogen Station on the Izukyu line. A shuttle bus runs from the station every 20 minutes between 14:20 and 17:00; call when you book, or once you know your arrival time, and the inn will put you on the nearest run. By car, about two and a half hours from Tokyo.

This is a private hotel with a wonderful view. The food is also excellent, with sashimi and dishes using the local specialty, kinmedai, going well with sake pairings.

The dinner& breakfast were absolutely amazing -one of the top 3 ,which I ever experienced traveling in Japan. Also private bath tub on balcony with free water flowing from natural hot spring , overlooking from the elevation point East side of Pacific Ocean ,and surrounded by greenery - it is truly impressive and very calming at the same time. However this hotel does not care or bother about plastic pollution -using single use plastic straws ,pet bottles for small complimentary water-while other hotels in the sane price range could easily offer more eco friendly solutions. Also rooms and decor of hotel do not reflect 5 stars - even so it is well kept and tidy, but has strangely outdated taste. And worst of all that room toilet has extremely bright automatic light ,which can not be switched off during night, even so we asked to switch it off. It is very disturbing.

It is definitely one of the best hotels that I have ever stayed. 1. The staff members were very friendly and professional. Some staff could speak good English. 2. The views were amazing! On the balcony you could enjoy the stunning views of Sagami Bay and the birdsongs. 3. The service was undoubtedly excellent! 4. It’s not near the station, but the shuttle bus can take you to the hotel from the station. 5. There is a study in which you can read and/ or listen to songs with a turntable. 6. The food was scrumptious! It was really a very pleasant stay!!!
