unfortunately we visited here on a cloudy day so the pacific view is not that amazing. we stayed in the lowest price room and can feel that it is a bit out-dated facilities and in need of a refurbishment soon. We rent the private bath for 1 hour and that is quite nice experience would recommend it for all. Dinner and breakfast are wonderful ingredients selected and cooked, absolutely no complaints on that. This is a distant and remote stay for those who want to escapte from noise.

We stayed one night at Oyado the Earth and found the hardware (rooms and grounds) amazing but the software (service) extremely lacking. First the pros - beautiful grounds, ocean facing rooms and shoes off as all corridors leading to rooms are lined with tatami. Food was definitely the highlight. The abalone was crisp and cooked in butter to perfection. Chef Mototsugu Yamakawa did an excellent job. Now the cons - we reserved a premium suite with a private dining room. On the website, they specifically listed that this room comes with in room dining, which is the reason we selected this room type. However, upon check in, the host told us that it’s restaurant dining only. We would have selected another room type such as the pool suite had we known about this. We can see why in room dining is difficult to execute because the corridors are all lined with tatami and the kitchen is quite far from the rooms. We did not give them a hard time but this is serious false advertising on the hotel’s part. The service is extremely lacking in this hotel. While we would not consider ourselves ryokan connoisseurs, I would say we have had our share of ryokan stays and high end hotels in Japan to know what to expect. Our favorites would be Sanso Amanosato, Takafue and Nishimuraya Honkan. Oyado the Earth really is lacking in service compared to our favorites. For example, when we entered the room, the ac was not turned on. Do note this is the peak of summer. We also received a call at 10pm at night and the first word they said without even addressing us was “Do not step on the grass, you must stay within the wooden panels.” Now we were in bed at that time, so we had no idea what he meant. However, he definitely woke us up. The next day we saw a small sign that we should stay within the wooden panels of the room exterior. In retrospect, my husband recalled that he stepped on the grass when we first saw our room which is facing the ocean. I think this is normal behavior as the grass is not blocked off and part of the front section of our room as we were on the first floor and had an outdoor onsen. I think the staff should notify guests when they give the room tour so guests are aware. When you see the ocean, you will be captivated by the view and the sign on the side is not obvious. We are not looking out for these rules when one is on vacation. It is unacceptable for the hotel to call us at this late hour in an accusatory language when they should have informed the guest at an appropriate time during check-in. Anyways, these are the service issues that make the stay less than stellar. The only five star service we received was a female hostess with glasses. We forgot to ask for her name as our stay was so dampened by the other staff members. She was the one who served us at the dining room and also took our suitcase to the car and gave us a warm farewell. She’s the only one who cared about service compared to the other staff members at Oyado.

A real authentic experience. The people and service are unmatched. They could improve the walking/trekking paths fairly easily and make this even better. Bring your pocketbooks !
