About this hotel

A Tsuruga Group resort at Sobetsu Onsen on the south shore of Lake Toya, surrounded by 56,000 square metres of garden, with 48 rooms across 12 types. They range from suites and Japanese-Western rooms with an open-air hot spring bath, through designer twins and a family room fitted out for children, to rooms where dogs can stay. The public bath, Tosen, looks out through large windows to the lake, its island and Mount Yotei, with an open-air bath, an auto-loyly sauna and a cold bath (the women’s side also has a silky bath). The water is a sodium bicarbonate-sulphate spring (hypotonic, neutral, high temperature), reheated and filtered in circulation. Carvings, prints and paintings drawing on the Ainu view of the world are placed throughout the building. About an hour and 20 minutes by car from New Chitose Airport, and about two hours from Sapporo.

Who it suits

A stay that stays inside, with the lake and the garden in view. The 12 room types are genuinely different, so the choice turns on whether you want an open-air bath in the room, are bringing a dog, or are travelling with children. Children of the opposite sex are admitted to the public bath and changing room only up to the age of six, so with an older child a room with its own open-air bath is the practical answer. The Tsuruga Group runs a no-cleaning policy on longer stays: on even-numbered nights the room is not serviced, and in exchange guests receive a 1,000-yen voucher for use in the hotel per room per night (for hygiene, a normal clean always happens every fifth night). Arriving by train and bus, a free shuttle meets the Sobetsu Onsen stop, but it must be booked by 20:00 the day before, runs by reservation only, and does not take dogs. There is also a paid direct coach from Sapporo Station.

There are 48 rooms in 12 types. The suites are three: a premier suite, a suite and a junior suite, all with an open-air hot spring bath. Rooms with an open-air bath also include Japanese-Western rooms in the east and west wings, two designer twins, and a family room fitted out for children. Beyond those are standard rooms and rooms where a dog can stay. Carvings, prints and paintings drawing on the Ainu view of the world are placed throughout the building.

Hot spring: the Tosen public bath, with an auto-loyly sauna

Tosen, the public bath, looks out through large windows to the lake, the island in it and Mount Yotei beyond. The men’s side has an open-air bath, an indoor tub, an auto-loyly sauna and a cold bath; the women’s side adds a silky reclining bath. The sauna pours aromatic water over the stones at set intervals. The baths and the sauna are open 13:00–1:00 and 5:00–9:30, with cleaning between 1:00 and 5:00. The shower heads at the washing stations are ReFa Fine Bubble S. The water is a sodium bicarbonate-sulphate spring, hypotonic, neutral and high temperature, listed for neuralgia, muscle pain and skin conditions. It is reheated to keep it at a comfortable temperature, and filtered in circulation and chlorinated for hygiene. Children of the opposite sex are admitted to the bath and changing room only up to the age of six.

Spa: treatments using Hokkaido ingredients

The treatment spa works by hand with natural ingredients from Hokkaido. It is open 15:00–23:00, with a last appointment at 22:00, by reservation. A drink and a sweet follow the treatment. Arriving more than ten minutes after the booked time may mean the appointment is cancelled or the course changed. Guests who are pregnant cannot take any of the treatments, because of the risk of a sudden change in condition.

Getting there: a free shuttle to the bus stop, a paid coach from Sapporo

By car it is about an hour and 20 minutes from New Chitose Airport on the expressway, about two hours from Sapporo and about three from the direction of Hakodate. Arriving by train and Donan Bus, the hotel runs a free shuttle to the Toyako Onsen bus terminal or the Sobetsu Onsen stop. It is reservation-only, must be booked by 20:00 the day before, is for guests only, and does not take dogs. The Sobetsu Onsen stop is a seven-minute walk away. A paid direct coach runs between the group-coach stand at the north exit of Sapporo Station and the hotel, shared with a neighbouring hotel; it must be booked by 20:00 seven days ahead and has limited seats.
