Overview

About this hotel

Five pool villas at Fukai, in the north of Ishigaki island. They sit on about 20,000 square metres of ground that was left as close to its natural contours as possible, so each villa has a garden of a different character. The architect was Dan Norihiko. Interiors are minimal and white, and the walls use Ryukyu limestone, the stone of Shuri Castle and the island’s field walls. Four of the five are one-bedroom villas for two adults, with two semi-double beds pushed together and a gazebo with a daybed in the grounds. Bath amenities are by Aromatherapy Associates of Britain. The restaurant serves breakfast and dinner, the latter Italian cooking built on Ryukyu ingredients. The name means dusk in the language of Okinawa.

Who it suits

With only five villas, you will barely pass another guest on the property. Each has its own pool and a gazebo, and meals are served on site, so a stay here can be complete without going out. Children of any age may stay, but from junior high school up they are charged as adults, under that there is a per-night supplement, and their dinner is a separate booking and charge. No baby food or formula is provided. The concierge desk is open 9:00–18:00, so this is not the place to plan a late arrival around. It is in the north of the island, away from both the airport and the town, so getting about means a car.

Features

What this place is like

Checked against the hotel’s own site. Anything we could not confirm is left out — that does not mean it is not there.

Villas: five in all, four of them one-bedroom

There are five villas, four of them one-bedroom. Those have two semi-double beds pushed together, a double vanity, and a bathroom with both a shower room and a tub. They take two adults, with one child sharing a bed per adult. A gazebo with a daybed stands in the grounds. A full wall of glass looks into the subtropical forest, and the walls use Ryukyu limestone. The bathroom has a tub wide enough for two and a large window, with a mirror opposite that catches the sky and the planting.

Dining: breakfast and dinner in the dining room; Italian dinners from Ryukyu ingredients

Breakfast and dinner are served in the dining room. Dinner is Italian cooking built on Ryukyu ingredients, with wine matched to it. The room faces the greenery through glass with the sky above, and there are tables and sofas outside as well. Inside, several seating areas with sofas are set apart for privacy.

The grounds: left close to their natural contours

The five villas sit on about 20,000 square metres of subtropical forest in the Yaeyama islands. The site was designed to keep its contours as far as possible, so each villa’s garden differs. The architect, Dan Norihiko, also designed the Omotesando Keyaki building and the renovation of Terminal 1 at Taiwan Taoyuan airport; the white buildings are built to settle into the landscape.

JUSANDI was a lovely place to stay and would highly recommend! It was in very close proximity to the Blue Cave and the staff was always so responsive to any requests we made. Jo specifically went above and beyond our expectations to ensure our experience was as great as possible!

My husband and I got to experience this gorgeous hotel for the last few days of our honeymoon. The villa is impeccable- spacious, comfortable beds, view of the sea, private pool, free drinks and snacks, private beach access to the blue cave. The hotel is basically a wildlife sanctuary and so serene. On top of that, the dinner was fantastic, featured local meat/seafood/produce and was extremely filling. Breakfast every morning was amazing as well- well balanced and always with fresh fruit. The staff were so sweet and helpful and always engaged in conversation with us about the wildlife. I cannot recommend this place enough and hope to come back one day!
