Overview

About this hotel

Built to the rules of the village on Taketomi Island: single-storey rooms behind gukku stone walls, along lanes of white sand, with the rooflines held down to match the island. There is no traffic light on Taketomi, and no convenience store.

Who it suits

You arrive by ferry from Ishigaki, and getting here can take half a day. A stay spent on the island's own clock, not one for a packed itinerary. Not to be confused with HOSHINOYA Okinawa, which is on the main island at Yomitan.

This was honestly one of the most incredible hotel experiences I have ever had in my life. HOSHINOYA Taketomi Island is so much more than a beautiful luxury hotel. What impressed me the most is how deeply the entire experience is connected to the culture, history, nature and traditions of Taketomi and the Yaeyama Islands. As an architect, I was already fascinated by the design of the property and the way the architecture respects the landscape and traditional character of the island. But what made the stay truly unforgettable were all the experiences created for guests. The staff is incredibly well trained and knowledgeable. Instead of simply organizing activities, they explain the history, culture and meaning behind them, which makes every experience much more interesting. I joined a bath salt experience where I learned about the local plants and herbs traditionally used on the island. We walked through their garden and herb area while learning about the plants, their botanical characteristics and how they were used historically in everyday life and traditional wellness practices. I also participated in a traditional weaving experience and learned about a textile technique deeply connected to the region. There was morning stretching, traditional music performances in the lounge and an Awamori tasting Even the food tells a story. The ingredients, plants, preparation and presentation constantly connect you back to the island, its nature and its culture. Everything feels intentional. What I loved most is that you do not simply stay at HOSHINOYA Taketomi Island. You interact, learn, discover and slowly understand the place around you. The hospitality was exceptional, the property is stunning and the entire experience was incredibly thoughtful. Without a doubt, one of the most memorable places I have ever stayed.

The worst hotel experience I’ve ever had in Japan. A typhoon was approaching, but our flight and ferry were still operating. Since our reservation was prepaid and non-refundable, we had no reasonable option to cancel and traveled as planned. Only after arriving on Taketomi Island were we informed that the hotel had decided to suspend operations due to the following day’s ferry cancellation, meaning we could not stay for the first two nights. We received no advance phone call or email, so we only learned about the closure upon arrival. Initially, we were simply told to arrange another hotel ourselves, despite being on a remote island we had never visited. Only after speaking with the general manager was another Hoshino Resorts property arranged for us. When we eventually stayed after the hotel reopened, there was no service recovery such as a room upgrade, complimentary drinks, or vouchers. I understand that closures due to natural disasters are sometimes unavoidable. However, the lack of advance communication, the initial response, and the absence of proactive support were very disappointing for a luxury brand like HOSHINOYA.

We really appreciate our stay at the hôtel. The environnement is perfect. The room really nice. The people that work at Taketomi are really people that are dédicated to us and make a big différence. We had the chance to meet « Lilico and Shintaro » really had a personnal approche - very proffessionals. Made our stay confortable and organise activities, moments at the spa for massage where really good. The menu à la carte could be more variate a bit. All the dinner and breakfast are Savoureux ! Really good. All the restaurant staff where really nice, and very respectfull. Thanks to the wonderful people that do the transports/ shuttles. Thanks to all the team at Taketomi !
