Overview

About this hotel

A Western-style mansion in Maruyama Park, Kyoto, built in 1909 by the businessman Kichibei Murai and designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan in 2024. The main house is used as a café and restaurant, and guests stay in the adjoining new wing, which has only six rooms. The rooms make generous use of solid wood, and their design takes its cue from the words of Tatsuaki Kuroda, the Kyoto-born Living National Treasure.

Who it suits

Suits a grown-up stay in Kyoto: dining in a protected Meiji-era mansion and sleeping in the quiet new wing. With just six rooms, the house stays calm. It also makes an easy base for walking Gion and Higashiyama.

Just a review of their cafe: the staff were super lovely and polite and the venue is beautiful. The food of the cafe is pretty poor - the scones are small, don't taste anything like scones, and have a soft, bouncy texture that you'd expect more from brioche. The rooibos tea is nothing to write home about, tastes the same as what you can buy from a supermarket. I'd go again for the atmosphere, just would probably skip the food and just get a tea.

Hotel Chourakukan provided an exceptional stay for my honeymoon. I would strongly recommend Hotel Chourakukan to those who are looking to be in the heart of historic Kyoto, while being able to experience history and luxury within their own hotel. Communicating in English was not a problem. Throughout our stay, hotel staff provided superb hospitality and went above and beyond on many occasions. Our room was upgraded, they arranged travel to sights around the area, and even pushed back our check out to fully enjoy their afternoon tea service. (speaking of, we got a tour of the historic estate before our afternoon tea, it was one of the highlights of our entire trip) The room itself was spacious, highlights include a spacious tub facing Marayuma park, and a fireplace that hotel staff would prepare, on request. The room also included access to a “lobby” shared with two other rooms on the floor. This lobby was constantly stocked with beverages, snacks, and featured pieces from the historic estate. It was a unique touch I haven’t seen from any other luxury hotels. Overall, the location, staff, room, and unique experience this hotel provides is second to none. Thank you so much Hotel Chourakukan!!!
