Overview

About this hotel

A hotel in the Kagiyacho district of Kyoto, built into the former head office of Nintendo. Nintendo began in 1889 when Yamauchi Fusajiro opened a shop making and selling hanafuda cards, and the house traded here under the name Marufuku, which the hotel now carries. The former head office, completed in 1930, is three buildings — office, residence and warehouse — and keeps the straight lines and geometric patterns of the Art Deco style that was fashionable in early Showa Japan. A fourth building, designed under the supervision of Ando Tadao, was added, and the four together hold 18 rooms including four suites. Light meals and all drinks during a stay are included in the room rate. About 15 minutes on foot from Kyoto Station, or six from Shichijo Station on the Keihan Line.

Who it suits

A stay for the buildings and for Nintendo’s history. The older wings keep the early-Showa office, house and warehouse as they were, and the new wing carries Ando Tadao’s design supervision — several rooms have his signature on them. Between the library, by Suppose Design Office, and the artworks through the building, this suits moving around the property more than staying in the room. There is no large communal bath on site, but guests may use a public bathhouse three minutes’ walk away and a fitness gym eight minutes away, both free. The hotel has no car park, so driving means using a nearby pay-by-the-hour lot. Paid transfers can be arranged from either Osaka airport.

Features

What this place is like

Checked against the hotel’s own site. Anything we could not confirm is left out — that does not mean it is not there.

Rooms: 18 across four buildings, old and new

There are 18 rooms across four buildings, four of them suites. Three are the original head office: the building the Yamauchi family lived in, and the ones used as offices and as a warehouse. The fourth was designed under the supervision of Ando Tadao, and several of its rooms carry his signature. Inside, there is a library by Suppose Design Office and work by a number of artists throughout.

From the editors

For the early-Showa building itself, that means one of the original wings; for open modern architecture, the new one. The two halves of the hotel are genuinely different.

Bath and treatments: a salon inside, a bathhouse nearby

The treatment room inside the hotel occupies part of a Japanese-style room in what was the Yamauchi family home. It runs 19:30–24:00, with a last appointment at 22:30, on irregular days; book at reception. There is no large communal bath here. Instead, guests may use a public bathhouse three minutes’ walk away free of charge (14:00–02:00, closed Thursdays, with a morning session from 6:00 at weekends), and a fitness gym with showers eight minutes away, also free, for guests aged 18 and over (10:00–19:00, last entry 18:00).

Getting there: 15 minutes from Kyoto Station, and no car park

About 15 minutes on foot from Kyoto Station, or six by taxi. Other options are Shichijo Station on the Keihan Line at about six minutes on foot, Gojo on the Karasuma subway line at about 11, and Kyoto-Kawaramachi on the Hankyu line at about 19. The hotel has no car park, so drivers use a nearby pay lot; it is about 13 minutes from the Kyoto-Minami expressway exit. Paid airport transfers can be arranged in advance, from 24,600 yen from Itami and from 42,300 yen from Kansai. Bicycles are free for guests, from 7:00 to 21:00.

We absolutely loved everything about our stay at Marufukuro during our honeymoon. The staff is so kind and extremely attentive. The hotel is beautiful and meticulously maintained. The in-room amenities were second to none. Nintendo history is thoughtfully and subtly weaved throughout every part of the hotel, and the library was awesome for Nintendo fans. The location was great--in a quiet area, but close to trains and other main parts of Kyoto.

A Perfect Stay at the Historic Nintendo HQ The History: Deeply immersive. Staying at the original Nintendo headquarters is a unique privilege, perfectly blending rich history with luxury. The Room: Immaculately designed and wonderfully spacious. The Amenities: The 24-hour complimentary drinks and snacks in the lounge elevate the whole experience. The Service: Absolutely great—attentive and welcoming staff. The Location: A reasonable, walkable distance from Kyoto Station. We had luggage, so we mainly took quick taxis, which was incredibly easy.

Should be a 3-star, not a 5-star — overpriced for what you get Marufukuro markets itself as a 5-star hotel, but based on our stay it’s a 3-star at best. The value for money is poor. Cleanliness was the worst part. Our room wasn’t properly cleaned — under the bed there was a cup, bottle caps, and dust, and the corners were full of dust too (photo attached). Not acceptable at this price. Service was essentially non-existent and the “all-inclusive” offering is very limited. The bar where you’re meant to make your own drinks was missing the advertised tutorials, and there was no Coca-Cola in the bar or all-inclusive areas. The Nintendo heritage is the main draw but it’s underused — the library is mostly books with only two real consoles, the rest are 3D-printed replicas. We stayed in the old building and the room had real issues: large gaps around the doors visible at night, an interior corridor-facing window that couldn’t be covered so light came in all night, and a persistent bad smell in the bathroom. Hospitality, service, and ambience were all lacking. Beautiful building and great story, but it doesn’t live up to a 5-star price or rating.
