Overview

About this hotel

An east and a west wing on high ground at Gora, every room with its own open-air hot spring bath. The view runs across the Hakone range and, on a good day, out to Sagami Bay. There is a bath with a view on the top floor.

Who it suits

Suits a stay spent without leaving the bath in your room. If you mean to use both that and the communal baths, give yourself dates long enough to stretch from check-in to check-out.

What this place is like

Checked against the hotel’s own site. Anything we could not confirm is left out — that does not mean it is not there.

Hot spring: an onsen bath on every room’s terrace; private baths cost extra

All 70 rooms, across the east and west wings, have an open-air bath filled with hot-spring water — a sodium chloride spring. The two shared baths, Soukai and Myojo, both have views and swap between men and women; they are open 5:00–10:00 and 15:00–24:00. Three private baths (Hinoki, Iwa and Silk) can be reserved for a fee. The Silk bath is not hot-spring water.

From the editors

The shared baths turn away guests with tattoos. The hotel’s site says nothing about tattoos in the in-room or private baths, so ask when you book.

Dining: a kaiseki-style course at Mutsuki — if your plan includes dinner

The main dining room, Mutsuki, serves a Japanese course built on kaiseki. Dinner runs 17:00–21:30; breakfast, Japanese-style, 7:30–10:00. The hotel sells both breakfast-only and half-board plans, so whether dinner is included depends on the plan. For food allergies, the kitchen only handles the eight allergens designated in Japan: shrimp, crab, walnut, wheat, buckwheat, egg, milk and peanut.

From the editors

If you want to eat dinner at the hotel, book a plan that includes it.

Getting there: a free shuttle from Odawara Station (twice a day, booking required)

A free shuttle bus runs twice a day between JR Odawara Station and the hotel. It must be booked in advance. The ride normally takes 45–50 minutes, but 90–120 minutes in peak-season traffic. It leaves Odawara at 12:15 and 15:15, and the hotel at 10:45 and 13:45, and may not run during local events or peak periods. Guest parking is available, with EV charging bays (charging is extra).

We had the most beautiful experience at Karaku. It was the highlight of our Japan trip. I honestly cannot believe some of these reviews about the service, as I cannot imagine a better service. Everyone has treated us incredibly well with so much respect. First time at a Michelin key and honestly they deserve it. The amount of detail that goes into everything is immaculate. The rooms and facilities are so clean, every corner, crevices, immaculate. You really feel the difference in care. The views from our room were so breathtakingly memorable that I would never forget it. It was one of the most beautiful sights I have ever seen. It was a bit confusing as to which wing to book. To get the best view of the mountains you have to book the East wing at high floors. You pay a little more but it’s much worth the view over looking at trees. The food was incredible as well. We got the Kobe beef teppanyaki course and it was amazing. The lounge buffet was awesome as well (unlimited drinks and small bites). Easy to get to from Tokyo. Just train to Odawara Station and prebook their free shuttle for pick up. I recommend getting picked up at their earliest time (12ish afternoon) and just have a walk around, visit the little town nearby as there are little shops, then chill at the lounge when you can get access to drinks and food. Highly recommended, definitely looking forward to coming back

My stay in Hakone left me with such warm memories, especially because of the wonderful staff. Everyone was so polite, welcoming, and thoughtful, and I felt truly cared for throughout my stay I am particularly grateful for the attention given to my fish allergy and food preferences. Everything was taken into account with such care that I could relax and enjoy my meals without worrying. That same consideration extended beyond dining. I felt that my comfort and personal preferences genuinely mattered A special thank you to the restaurant’s chef, whose kindness and warmth made the experience even more memorable. He also gave me a small origami gift from his daughter, which was such a sweet and touching gesture☺️ Thank you to the whole team for making my stay so special. This experience has made me want to seek out Japanese hotels wherever I travel in the world. I would love to return 🙏🏻❤️

All the water, juices, tea and coffee was all complementary. When I first walked in, there was a kind receptionist guided me all the way from the main building to my hotel and even recommended a completely free lounge for us to go. All of the receptionist was so kind and so nice. When i walked into the room, I saw a hot tub that could fit 3-4 people and you could change the temperature easily. The bed were soft and even the pillows were a bit too soft, it was very comfortable to sleep on. It was such a nice experience, I’m definitely coming back to this hotel again!!
