About this hotel
An all-suite ryokan on the high ground at Gora, with a wing that carries over the design of an early Showa villa. The rooms run to around 100 square metres, large for Hakone, and each has a hot spring bath.
Who it suits
A stay that buys space and quiet. There are few rooms, and the place is laid out so that you rarely meet anyone. It is up a slope from Gora Station, so the transfer is part of the plan.

What this place is like
Checked against the hotel’s own site. Anything we could not confirm is left out — that does not mean it is not there.
Hot spring: all 23 rooms have an open-air bath fed from the inn’s own spring
Every one of the 23 rooms has a private open-air bath, filled straight from the inn’s own hot spring without recirculation (kakenagashi). The water is a mildly alkaline simple spring from Kowakudani, clear and colourless. Some rooms also have a mist sauna. The shared open-air bath, which has a dry sauna, uses filtered, recirculated water and is open 15:00–24:00 and 6:00–11:00.
From the editors
Only the in-room baths run straight from the source. If unfiltered onsen water matters to you — or if you would rather not use a shared bath — your own room is where you will bathe.

Dining: a Japanese course or teppanyaki in a 1925 building
Dinner is served at Momiji, in a building from 1925 that is a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan. Choose a Japanese course — in a private room or at a table facing the garden — or teppanyaki at the counter. Dinner can start any time from 18:00 to 20:30 (last start). Breakfast is Japanese-style, 8:00–10:00 (last start). Some room types can have the Japanese course served in the room.
From the editors
The site does not say which room types offer in-room dinner, so ask when you book. Mention allergies and foods you avoid at the same time.

Getting there: about five minutes by shuttle from Kowakudani Station
The inn runs a shuttle from Kowakudani Station on the Hakone Tozan line and from the Kowakien bus stop; request it when you book. From Tokyo, take the shinkansen to Odawara and the Hakone Tozan line via Hakone-Yumoto to Kowakudani — about 85 to 105 minutes in all. Free parking.

Our family had the pleasure of staying here for two nights! The Kaiseki cuisine dining experience was exceptional; both dinner and breakfast were of Michelin-star quality. The room was clean and perfectly quiet, allowing for a very restful sleep. We would like to give special recognition to Kerada for his great service during check-in, driving, and check-out. He was proactive, friendly, and professional, explaining everything clearly before we even needed to ask. There was no language barrier. Furthermore, after departing, I realized I had left my AirPods behind. We emailed the hotel, the staff acted promptly, coordinating with our next hotel in Osaka to forward the package to us. We are completely satisfied with our stay and extend our deepest gratitude to the entire team!
Read the full review on Google MapsMixed feelings about my stay here. My husband and I were celebrating our anniversary but the experience felt a little lackluster. First off, communication was poor. We called ahead from our previous accommodation to arrange for pickup from the train station but then our romance car got canceled due to an accident so we had to switch to local trains. We notified them of this so that they would be aware when we would be arriving but nobody showed up to get us. We had to find our own transportation to the hotel and no acknowledgement was made of the missed transportation upon checkin. The meals were beautifully arranged and tasted good but, unfortunately, something I ate made me sick for the rest of our trip which was a huge negative. Our room had a private onsen but backed onto the street so you could hear cars driving by. Service at checkout was very transactional. The guy who checked us out spoke minimal English and was not very helpful with transportation questions. Some guests were given departing gifts while others were not. There were some gift bags remaining so I’m not sure if the guy who checked us out just forgot or if they were selective about who they gave them to.
Read the full review on Google MapsSorry to have to leave a 3/5 review, but it's important to be objective here. This is marketed as a pricey 5-star hotel, but very oddly the service just isn't up to that level. Specifically: - We were not picked up from the train station despite exchanging emails with the hotel several times on the topic. - We detailed our dietary requirements months in advance, and rather than providing alternative ingredients, most of the time they just removed ingredients from the dishes. Additionally, we were repeatedly offered drinks we advised in advance we can't have. Overall I'd describe the service as very methodical, but completely lacking in lateral/logical thinking, which you'd expect with a 5-star hotel. There's also very little internal communication in the hotel about arrangements, such as the car-pickup from the station being missed. Our hotel room was nice, but the washroom was on a different floor to the bathroom which is very strange, and had no soap. Again, just feels like logical thinking was missed in designing the hotel. That all being said, it was comfortable, beautiful, and very relaxing. We'd recommend the hotel to friends, but just hope the service can be improved.
