Overview

About this hotel

Directly opposite Nijo Castle, on the site of the Mitsui family’s own residence. You enter through the Kajiimiya gate, moved here and rebuilt, and the guest wings stand around a garden at the centre. A thermal spring drawn from under the grounds feeds the bathhouse.

Who it suits

Close enough to walk to both Nijo Castle and the Kyoto Imperial Palace. Because the hot spring is in the building, you can come back to it between one sight and the next. A room facing the garden and one that does not are different stays.

What this place is like

Checked against the hotel’s own site. Anything we could not confirm is left out — that does not mean it is not there.

Rooms: 160 in all; only the Onsen Suites have a hot-spring bath

There are 160 rooms. The Onsen Suites (101–111 m², facing a small courtyard garden) have an open-air bath with hot-spring water from the grounds; the other rooms have stone bathtubs. Other suites include the Nijo Suite (112 m²) and the Presidential Suite (213 m²), both facing Nijo Castle.

From the editors

If you want onsen water in your own room, book an Onsen Suite.

Hot spring: natural onsen from beneath the grounds — a swimsuit spa and a paid private bath

A natural hot spring rises beneath the hotel grounds and feeds the Thermal Spring spa, which you use in a swimsuit. A private onsen for staying guests (over 100 m², with a mist sauna) can be booked for a fee, 7:00–23:00.

From the editors

This is not a ryokan-style communal bath where you bathe naked. For rooms with their own hot-spring bath, see the rooms section.

Getting there: three minutes’ walk from Nijojo-mae subway station

Three minutes on foot from exit 2 of Nijojo-mae Station on the Tozai subway line, or ten from exit 2 of Karasuma-Oike on the Karasuma line. About 15 minutes by car from Kyoto Station and about 100 from Kansai International Airport. The hotel can arrange a chauffeured car or taxi at extra cost. Parking for 23 cars. The entrance is on Aburanokoji-dori.

An unforgettable stay and the best hospitality we have ever experienced Mitsui Kyoto has been the highlight of our Japan vacation. It is, without a doubt, the nicest hotel we have ever stayed at, but what truly sets it apart is the people. From the incredible attention to detail to the genuine warmth and kindness we experienced every day, everything felt thoughtful and personal. Traveling with our young daughter, we especially appreciated how welcome and cared for our family felt throughout our stay. Every interaction left us feeling that the staff genuinely cared about making our experience special. It is rare to find a place where the beauty of the property is matched by the character and kindness of the people who work there. The hospitality here is truly world class, and it is the little things that made the biggest difference. We are genuinely sad to leave. Our time here has given our family memories we will cherish for years to come, and we sincerely hope to return someday. Thank you to the entire team at Mitsui Kyoto for making our stay such a meaningful part of our Japan journey. You have set a standard for hospitality that will be difficult for anywhere else to match. If you are considering staying here, do not hesitate. This place is something truly special.

A truly exceptional experience. The property is breathtaking and from the moment you walk in there is a cohesive identity to the place. It feels much more special than a generic luxury brand hotel like the Ritz or St Regis and, without doubt, my service experience far exceeded what I usually get at those hotels. Staff was attentive and truly embodied omotenashi. For instance during a tea ceremony we casually mentioned having to check out very early the next morning to catch our train. With only that casual mention, we were met at the lobby door with beautiful boxed breakfast at 5:30 am when we left. Truly a Michelin 3 key experience from start to finish.

★★★★★ The Mitsui was an outstanding experience from beginning to end. The food was beautifully prepared, incredibly fresh, and full of flavor, with every dish showing real attention to detail. The presentation was just as impressive as the taste, and the entire meal felt like a true Japanese dining experience rather than simply going out to eat. What really made Kazuha and Lin memorable was the service. Everyone was welcoming, attentive, and genuinely seemed to care that we were enjoying ourselves. The atmosphere was relaxed and elegant, making it a perfect place to slow down and enjoy a great meal while visiting Japan. My wife and I had a wonderful time, and Kazuha and Lin were easily one of the memorable dining experiences of our trip. Great food, excellent hospitality, and a beautiful atmosphere. We would absolutely return and highly recommend Kazuha to anyone looking for an exceptional meal in Japan.
