Overview

About this hotel

A long-established hotel on a rise at Awataguchi in Higashiyama. Besides the main building it has Kasuien, a sukiya-style annex designed by Togo Murano, one of the leading architects of Japanese modernism. Its 2,100 sqm spa, fed by a hot spring drilled on the grounds, is among the largest in Kyoto and has a rooftop garden and an outdoor pool.

Who it suits

The main building and Kasuien make for completely different stays. Choose Kasuien for the architecture and the garden, the main building for the views and the facilities. Being on a hill in Higashiyama, it is within walking distance of Nanzenji and Heian Shrine, though with slopes to climb.

What this place is like

Checked against the hotel’s own site. Anything we could not confirm is left out — that does not mean it is not there.

Rooms: the main building, and Murano Togo’s Kasuien

Rooms divide between the main building and Kasuien, the sukiya-style annexe. Kasuien was designed by Murano Togo, a leading figure in Japanese modernism: you pass through a cypress-bark gate into the garden, and the original detailing survives under the deep eaves. Tea is served in its lobby, looking onto the garden. Rooms in the main building start at around 38 sqm, with suites over 50 sqm.

From the editors

Kasuien is close to being a separate ryokan — how you move through it and how it feels are both unlike the main building. If the architecture is the point, that is where you stay.

Breakfast: buffet or Japanese set at Rakuu

Breakfast is served at Rakuu, the all-day dining room on the second floor, 6:30–10:00. Choose between a buffet of around 50 Japanese and Western dishes and a Japanese set meal. Eggs are cooked to order at a live station.

Getting there: two minutes from Keage subway station

About two minutes on foot from exit 2 of Keage Station on the Tozai subway line. From Kyoto Station, take the Karasuma line to Karasuma-Oike (about 5 minutes) and change to the Tozai line for Keage (about 8). At the Hachijo exit of Kyoto Station, the hotel’s Satellite Concierge desk takes your luggage and delivers it to the hotel, free for staying guests (9:00–18:00). Valuables, fragile items and electronics are not accepted.

I had a wonderful stay at The Westin Miyako Kyoto. The facilities and rooms were exceptionally beautiful, modern, and impeccably maintained. Having stayed at many Westin hotels around the world, I can confidently say this is one of the finest properties I have experienced. What impressed me even more was the outstanding hospitality. The staff were attentive, professional, and genuinely caring throughout my stay. I accidentally left behind a personal item, and they handled the situation with great kindness and efficiency, which I truly appreciated. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Kyoto, and I will definitely choose to stay here again on my next trip.

A nice hotel, with good amenities. The foyer and dining spaces are spacious and opulent and let you know that this is an upmarket hotel. The rooms and hallways upstairs are not quite as beautiful, but clean and thought out. Rooms are spacious with large comfortable beds and pillows. Climate control in the room was easy to work and effective, adjusting this during the day was simple and it changed the room temperature fast. Very nice, just not incredible :) The nespresso in my room was broken, which was a shame. Staff were wonderful in all cases. From check in, to helping me with my suitcase and showing me the room, to the shuttle bus drivers, the taxi helpers outside the hotel, the bartenders in the hotel bar; everyone was very kind and helpful, and didnt bat an eyelid or treat me differently when i was in my vacation clothes (very non-formal). I was very gretaful for this. Requests are accommodated easily - i requested some more towels and got them delivered to my room within a few minutes, no questions asked. The location is the biggest downside... its a half hour walk from most bars or restaurants and the bustle of kyoto. It sort of isolates you to the hotel facilities (which are very expensive for Japan), or comits you to a taxi or a trek back to the hotel after exploring elsewhere. The shuttle bus helps, conveniently dropping off in two handy locations as well as the station, runs every half hour. Unfortunately you cant get picked up from those other stops, but it at least means youre only having to do the trek one-way. Value for money wasnt quite there for me overall.

I would highly recommend this hidden gem of a hotel. The shuttle service is convenient, service top notch and facilities amazing
