About this hotel
A long-established ryokan at Gora, on the site of a former imperial family villa. The buildings step down the slope, and the long corridors and the windows keep the mountain green in view. Some rooms have their own open-air bath.
Who it suits
One night, two meals, for the architecture, the garden and the food. Less a base for getting around Hakone than a way of buying the hours spent inside the ryokan itself.

What this place is like
Checked against the hotel’s own site. Anything we could not confirm is left out — that does not mean it is not there.
Rooms: with an open-air bath, or a standard Japanese room
Rooms fall into five groups: the annex villas (bettei), detached rooms (hanare), suites (kihinshitsu), Japanese rooms with an open-air bath, and standard Japanese rooms. Those with an open-air bath include the Aoi suite (rock bath), the Fuji and Ume suites (stone bath), and the Matsu, Tsubaki and Suzukake rooms. Other suites have a hinoki-cypress bath with a view, or a steam sauna and jacuzzi. Standard Japanese rooms come in four types, A to D.
From the editors
The standard rooms (A–D) do not mention an open-air bath in their names. If bathing in your room is the point, check the room’s facilities before you book.

Dining: dinner and breakfast included, usually served in your room
Rates include dinner and breakfast, normally served in your room (in the restaurant if the room is not suitable). Report dietary restrictions or allergies at least three days before arrival, using the allergy form linked in your booking confirmation email. Vegetarian and gluten-free meals can be arranged, but everything is cooked in one kitchen, so cross-contamination cannot be ruled out entirely. Halal and other certified ingredients are not available, and requests made on the day cannot be accommodated.
From the editors
Kadan Hakone, the kaiseki restaurant in the early-Showa Western-style house, is also open to non-guests. Its conditions are separate from the meals served to staying guests.

Getting there: a car from Gora Station
Call the inn when you arrive at Gora Station and a company car (a Mercedes) will collect you. A limousine service — sedan or van — is also available from central Tokyo and from Haneda and Narita airports; choosing a specific vehicle costs extra. By car from Tokyo, take the Tomei Expressway to Atsugi, then the Odawara-Atsugi road and Route 1.

I couldn't stretch enough how positive the experience was. My wife and I booked the Bettei Suite Akebono. We're not particularly rich or wealthy, so it was quite the expense for us. However, we both agreed that it was worth every penny. The staff are so nice and helpful, ensuring to go to great extents to help their guests. We arrived by car and they made sure to park our car for us and get our luggage. They even went as far as extending their own umbrellas over us (it was a rainy day) for the few steps we had to take before entering the hotel. Inside, they helped us with our plans for the Hakone trip, and even gave us a ride to the first station in our trip. It was close to the hotel so we decided to not use our own car, and they gave us a ride back when we finished. They were extremely nice, the food was a unique and delicious experience, I've personally never eaten ingredients that have been treated with such care, and the ingredients felt very supreme, fresh and unique. The dinner and breakfast were very much filling, and I am a man of a particularly large appetite. I won't elaborate on the view from the room and from the lounge. It is breathtaking and must not be missed. Overall my wife and I agreed that in the future we wish to come back to there, even if it's pricey; worth every penny.
Read the full review on Google MapsIt came highly recommended by a Japanese friend. Unfortunately, this is more a Westerner oriented Ryokan, and not the traditional Japanese one. Bath room and toilet filled will woody, sewer and mouldy smell. Aircon basically doesn't work... Filling the room with hot air even during a 16 degree C night. We had to sleep with the balcony doors wide opened. Our room attendant Nineko, who served us, is very kind and professional. Thank you for making our stay much better. Not the first choice if you want a traditional Japanese Ryokan.
Read the full review on Google MapsMy wife and I had such a stellar experience at Gora Kadan. The staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating. The grounds were stunning and amenities were fantastic. The public onsen was very spacious and incredibly well maintained. We had a private onsen attached to our room which was such a nice addition to our already beautiful room. Our attendant, Riku-san, was a big reason our stay was so excellent and a large part of why we'll be back. He was extremely attentive and helpful throughout our stay ensuring we were well cared for.

Before you book
Only questions we could answer from the hotel’s own site.
- Can I use the shared baths or the pool if I have a tattoo?
- Small one-point fashion tattoos are fine as they are (the inn’s FAQ gives a size guide). For anything larger, the inn asks you to use a private open-air bath instead. The pool can sometimes be booked privately, depending on availability on the day.(source, checked 8 October 2026)
