About this hotel
A ryokan on Fuyacho street, in business since the end of the Edo period. Many writers stayed here, Kawabata Yasunari among them. The rooms divide between the sukiya architecture of the main house and a newer wing with modern fittings.
Who it suits
A stay for the architecture and for the ryokan itself. Which of the two buildings you take changes the experience a great deal, so it is worth reading reports on both. It is central, so there is little travelling to do.

I have been to Japan more times than I am able to recollect, which is no great boast, since a man who cannot recall how often he has traveled is either very well traveled or very forgetful, and I suspect I am both. The object of these wanderings has always been the hot spring and the ryokan, and my guide has been the Relais & Châteaux list, which has never once deceived me. This is remarkable, for guides, like men, are generally reliable only until one relies on them. Hiiragiya, however, surpassed nearly every house on that list, and in the matter of hospitality, or "omotenashi" as it is called here, surpassed them rather thoroughly. This is no small feat in a country where even the business hotel treats its guests like minor nobility. The property and its comforts were generous and, I regret to report, perfect in every way, which robs this critic of his chief pleasure. The food was such that I felt myself seated in a Michelin-starred establishment rather than a ryokan dining room, and I have since regarded ordinary dinners with a certain contempt. We were fortunate to meet the youngest okami (proprietress), Mai Nishimura-san, and our lovely nakai, Kyoko-san, both of whom bore their duties with a grace that I could only admire. One caveat remains, which I offer in the spirit of kindness. Hiiragiya sits at the edge of the very busy Oike-dori, and the guest who selects a room facing that street must be prepared to share his slumber with the traffic. Unless he is accustomed to such company, he would do well to choose otherwise.

Michelin level Kaiseki dinner is the highlight. Banquet room is soooooo beautiful and architecturally very well designed! Highly recommended!
Read the full review on Google MapsGenuinely a life changing experience. We were extremely blessed to be gifted a one night stay here for our last night in Japan as an engagement present. The care and attention to detail they put into every movement, furnishing and space is simply unrivalled. The moment you step into the place, it feels like you are being transported into a whole different time. Both the experience of the Kaiseki dinner and the Japanese breakfast were on par with any Michelin restaurant you could find. Definitely recommend having breakfast in the dining room. The morning light streaming in to the gardens creates a sense of tranquility that allows you to forget the bustling streets and busy city and truly be present in the moment. Simply impeccable. We can only look forward to the next time we are able to enjoy such luxury and beauty.
