Overview

About this hotel

In a private forest at the foot of Takagamine, north of Kinkaku-ji. It sits away from the city, and the grounds are covered in moss and cedar. The buildings are kept low and scattered, so that walking the garden becomes part of the stay.

Who it suits

Less a base for sightseeing in Kyoto than a stay for the forest and the hot spring. Getting into the city assumes a car, so it does not suit an itinerary packed with temples and shrines. Its value shows over several nights spent on the grounds.

I’ve stayed with my girlfriend at 10 different hotels in Japan since we came here last year, and I can confidently say Aman Kyoto is the best hotel we’ve stayed at so far. If you’re looking for a place to relax, enjoy nature, and experience true peace, this is definitely the place. What made this stay even more meaningful was that it’s been about a year and a half since I last returned to my home country. The hotel’s warmth and atmosphere reminded me of my hometown and, for a moment, made me feel at home. Big thanks to Nao, Sumiga, Yuho, Julio, the great lady Marina from Breakfast, Zhi, Isei, and Lama for making our stay so memorable. And a special thanks to Yuna for her kindness and warm hospitality throughout our stay— she delivered an exceptional service that truly stood out. Thank you Aman Kyoto team!

This property embodies comfort, warmth, and a true sense of home—this is Aman Kyoto! Every moment exceeds expectations. Everyone radiated positive energy. They were all pleasant. Rooms were undeniably stunning! The lush green scenery was absolutely breathtaking. The entire Aman Kyoto experience will truly last a lifetime. Kudos to their GM, also to Shojiro, Reservations Team, Restaurant Team, Housekeeping, Concierge, Front Office and Suzuki who drove us to Kyoto station, BIG THANK YOU!

Aman Kyoto is especially beautiful in summer. Its grounds are peaceful, immersive and, in our opinion, comparable to some of Kyoto’s most famous temples and gardens. The secluded setting makes it a rare place where you can genuinely slow down and relax. We also greatly enjoyed the Living Pavilion. The food was consistently excellent, and the setting was beautiful, especially the sunken courtyard, which feels like a work of art. Although the guest rooms are not especially large, the layout is exceptionally well designed, making them feel comfortable, calm and easy to settle into. We also appreciated the thoughtful turndown gifts provided each evening, each reflecting an aspect of Kyoto’s history and culture. The Aman Kyoto luggage tags we received upon departure were another lovely keepsake. What made our stay especially memorable, however, was the service. Every member of staff we encountered was warm, attentive and thoughtful, from the team at the entrance and the staff member who assisted with our check-in, to the teams at the Living Pavilion, the spa and the hotel’s activities. Staff members remembered our surname and addressed us personally, making the service feel warm and individual. We would especially like to thank Mr Lama. We first visited Aman Kyoto in March and returned again this summer. He recognised us and made us feel sincerely welcomed back. He took a genuine interest in our plans and experiences, and speaking with him always felt relaxed and natural, almost like catching up with a friend. The staff member who led our calligraphy session also left a lasting impression. She was highly skilled, patient and enthusiastic. Before we left, she presented us with a fan on which she had personally written our names in calligraphy. It was an incredibly thoughtful gesture and has become one of our favourite mementos from the stay. The only possible drawback is the distance from central Kyoto, but can that really be considered a disadvantage? Its secluded location is precisely what allows Aman Kyoto to offer such a rare sense of privacy, tranquillity and escape.
