Overview

About this hotel

A FUFU house on the high ground in Atami, every room with an open-air hot spring bath. What you see depends on whether you face the sea or the hills. The building is given over to rest; it takes no day visitors.

Who it suits

A short journey from Tokyo by Shinkansen, so even one night leaves real time here. Most of that time goes on the bath in your room, which makes an early check-in and a late check-out worth arranging.

What this place is like

Checked against the hotel’s own site. Anything we could not confirm is left out — that does not mean it is not there.

Rooms: 32 in all, in two wings — FUFU Atami (26) and Konoma no Tsuki (6)

There are 26 rooms in the FUFU Atami wing and 6 in the Konoma no Tsuki wing. FUFU Atami rooms are styled on a Japanese house; Konoma no Tsuki rooms have a garden terrace.

Baths: an open-air bath in every room, plus shared open-air baths with saunas

Every room has its own open-air bath. The two shared open-air bathhouses, Oukou and Chikuei, swap between men and women each day; both have an open-air bath, a cold plunge, a sauna (steam at Oukou, dry at Chikuei) and an outdoor rest area. Open 6:00–11:00 and 15:00–24:00. The spring is a calcium-sodium sulphate-chloride spring.

Dinner: depends on the wing — Japanese or teppanyaki, or sushi kappo at Konoma no Tsuki

Dinner depends on which wing you stay in. Guests in the FUFU Atami wing eat either Japanese kaiseki at Shirano Hitoe, where every table is in a private room, or teppanyaki at Hinotsukasa. Guests in Konoma no Tsuki eat sushi kappo at Umi no Yuha. Breakfast is Japanese in both.

Getting there: pick-up from Atami or Kinomiya Station, requested when you book

The inn will collect you from Atami or Kinomiya Station if you ask when booking; from Atami Station it is about 10 minutes by car. From Tokyo, the Kodama shinkansen takes about 48 minutes to Atami.

We had been this kind of small high class hotels/resorts, Fufu Atami is one of our favorite, a great place to stay, small but classic, high end but cost efficient, the live chef serving food is particular excellent.
