Overview

About this hotel

A mountain resort ringed by the Hakone range. Every room has a hot-spring bath in a bathroom whose windows open wide — not a separate outdoor bath. The rooms use Gora onsen and the communal baths Owakudani onsen, two different springs. The buildings are kept low along the slope, so what fills the windows is green.

Who it suits

The kind of place where the room’s bath and the building itself are the stay. It rewards planning to be here from check-in to check-out rather than working the museums and Lake Ashi into the days.

What this place is like

Checked against the hotel’s own site. Anything we could not confirm is left out — that does not mean it is not there.

Hot spring: Gora water in your room, milky Owakudani water in the shared bath

The in-room baths and the shared baths draw on different springs. The room baths use Gora onsen — a clear sodium chloride spring — in a bathroom whose windows open wide to the outside. The shared baths use Owakudani onsen, an acidic chloride-sulphate spring that is milky white and smells of sulphur. Shared bath hours: 6:00–11:00 and 15:00–24:00.

From the editors

Two different waters in one stay. The shared-bath water is acidic, and the inn lists sensitive skin or mucous membranes among its contraindications.

Dining: a Japanese course or teppanyaki, in the restaurant

Both dinner and breakfast are served in the restaurant. For dinner, choose the Japanese course at Yamanoe — prix fixe, so you pick dishes — or the teppanyaki course at Ishizue. Japanese dinner starts between 18:00 and 20:30 (last start). Breakfast, 8:00–10:00 (last start), centres on rice freshly cooked in a kama pot.

From the editors

Dinner is not served in the room. Mention allergies and foods you avoid when you book.

Getting there: about five minutes by shuttle from Gora Station

A shuttle meets guests at Gora Station on the Hakone Tozan line; request it when you book. From Tokyo Station, take the shinkansen to Odawara and the Hakone Tozan line, changing at Hakone-Yumoto. From Shinjuku, the Odakyu Romancecar reaches Hakone-Yumoto in about 90 minutes. Free parking (mention it when you book). If you are also staying at Hakone Suishoen, a sister property, the inn will drive you between the two.

We had a wonderful experience here. We absolutely loved our stay and wish we had stayed longer. We really enjoyed the Kaiseki dinner. The staff were very helpful and courteous. The Hakone area is beautiful.

One half of the room was a futon which was unusable. Poor room layout for the luxury corner suite. Very Dark. Cannot see anything. Onsen in the room is indoors. It took them an hour just to get us some streaming. Really?for these prices? Not cool. Such a complete and utter disappointment. You MUST eat dinner at 6PM or 7:30. Same for breakfast. Checkin took an hour. The dining room is loud . WAY too much noise. They did send us to their sister resort, but the service there was terrible. All in all Hakone itself and FUFU Hakone is way overhyped and pricey.

The hotel has a lot of great qualities, especially the beautiful grounds and incredibly kind staff. Unfortunately, the inflexibility around meals was difficult to overlook, especially given the price. After dinner didn’t sit well with us, they weren’t able to accommodate changing our Japanese breakfast to a Western breakfast, and there were very few snacks or other food options available throughout the day, leaving us quite hungry. The rooms were beautiful but unfortunately weren’t as clean as expected, with dirty-looking floors and various stains on the furniture. The staff were definitely the highlight and consistently warm and welcoming. However, given the overall experience, I would not return.
