Overview

About this hotel

On the bank of the Kamo river, looking across it to the Higashiyama hills. It is in the middle of the city but built low along the water, so the rooms look out onto the river and the gardens.

Who it suits

A stay that balances walking the city against being somewhere quiet. Gion and Pontocho are within walking distance, close enough to go out at night and come back. The river side and the hill side are different stays, which is why stay reports keep raising the question of which way a room faces.

Elegance at its finest. One of the best hotels/resorts I have ever stayed in. The staff were lovely, grounds were clean, daily breakfast was delicious, specifically the French toast. We went on an AM bike ride and toured the art collection around the resort which made us fall in love with this place even more. There were so many personal touches added to our stay. Ricardo was one of the highlights, so lovely and we hope to see him when we return. Thank you Ritz Kyoto for a wonderful stay!

A truly wonderful stay! It is clear that the hotel has very high standards, and everything was carried out with great care and attention. We were lucky to receive an upgrade to a fourth-floor room overlooking the Kamogawa River, and the view was absolutely beautiful. The service was just as impressive. We are quite particular and have stayed at many luxury hotels around the world, but The Ritz-Carlton, Kyoto gave us almost nothing to criticize. Special thanks to Arielle—hopefully I have spelled her name correctly—who assisted us the most during our stay and made the experience even more memorable. We would be very happy to return in the future!

From the moment we stepped into the hotel, it truly felt like we had left the busy streets of Kyoto behind. The atmosphere was incredibly peaceful, calming, and welcoming—a place where we immediately felt relaxed and at home. The service was, by far, the best we’ve experienced across all the Ritz-Carlton properties we’ve stayed at. Amy, who checked us in, was exceptional. The in-room check-in was seamless and unhurried. She took the time to understand our plans, helped organize our stay, answered every question, and made thoughtful recommendations without ever making us feel rushed. One moment that really stood out was after we ordered room service. Amy noticed and surprised our family with a special treat, accompanied by a handwritten note. It was completely unexpected and such a thoughtful gesture that perfectly reflected the genuine hospitality of the team. A special thank you to the concierge team as well. Every restaurant recommendation was excellent, and they even printed maps for each reservation so we could simply show them to our taxi drivers. It was a small detail that made exploring Kyoto effortless. The hotel is also exceptionally family-friendly. Our kids loved the scavenger hunt around the property, and the special children’s shower sponge waiting in the room was another thoughtful touch that made them feel genuinely welcomed. Beautiful property, outstanding service, and thoughtful details at every turn. The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto has set a new standard for hospitality for our family, and it will absolutely be our first choice whenever we return to Kyoto.
