Overview

About this hotel

A FUFU house in the woods by Lake Kawaguchi, every room with its own hot spring bath. On the right day Mount Fuji shows itself from the rooms and the public areas, but that is entirely down to the weather.

Who it suits

How much you get out of it turns on whether Fuji appears, so it is worth reading several stay reports for what people actually saw. About two hours by car from central Tokyo.

What this place is like

Checked against the hotel’s own site. Anything we could not confirm is left out — that does not mean it is not there.

Hot spring: every room has an open-air onsen bath laid with Mount Fuji lava

Every room has a private open-air bath of natural hot-spring water, laid with lava stone from Mount Fuji. The water is from the Nishikawa spring (Reiho no Yu), a sodium-calcium sulphate spring. There are also shared baths: a dry sauna with löyly and a cold plunge on the men’s side, and a mist sauna on the women’s. Shared bath hours: 15:00–24:00 and 6:00–11:00.

Views: how much of Mount Fuji you see depends on the floor

The hotel’s own room guide describes the fourth-floor Kozue Precious Suites as looking over Lake Kawaguchi to Mount Fuji, and the second- and third-floor Konohana Comfort Suites as seeing the lake and the mountain between the trees. The ground-floor Komorebi Stylish Suites open onto a balcony in the forest. The fourth-floor FUFU Luxury Suite looks across Mount Fuji and the lake from its living room, and has an open-air lava-stone onsen and a stone sauna bed of its own.

From the editors

If a full view of Mount Fuji is the point, book a fourth-floor room. For the ground floor, even the hotel only says you can “feel” the forest and the mountain — it does not promise a view.

Dining: a Japanese course cooked over firewood and lava stone

Dinner is a Japanese course at Yamanoha, using local seasonal ingredients finished over firewood, flame and lava stone. You choose a start time between 18:00 and 20:30 (last start). Breakfast is Japanese, with rice cooked over wood in a traditional kamado stove; choose a start at 8:00, 9:00 or 9:30 (the last). Mention allergies and foods you avoid when you book.

Getting there: about 15 minutes by taxi from Kawaguchiko Station

The nearest station is Kawaguchiko on the Fujikyu line, about 15 minutes away by taxi. The hotel’s access page does not mention a shuttle. From Shinjuku, take a JR Chuo line limited express and change at Otsuki for the Fujikyu line — about two hours to Kawaguchiko. Highway buses to Kawaguchiko Station also run from Busta Shinjuku, Tokyo Station and Shibuya. Guests park free in the outdoor car park (28 spaces).

We stayed at FUFU Kawaguchiko for our 20th wedding anniversary, and it was a truly wonderful experience. A special thank you to the FUFU team for preparing the beautiful flower bouquet and anniversary cake for us. It was such a thoughtful touch and made our celebration even more memorable. The room was beautiful and peaceful, the private bath was very relaxing, and the dining experience was excellent. Most importantly, the service was warm, attentive, and professional throughout our stay. Thank you to Ryu, Miss Zhung and the entire FUFU Kawaguchiko team for making our 20th anniversary so special. This will always be a very meaningful memory for us, and we would be very happy to return again in the future. Highly recommended for couples looking for a peaceful and special stay near Lake Kawaguchi.

An unforgettable luxury ryokan experience. We had incredible luck with the weather, which meant clear, postcard-perfect views of Mt. Fuji directly from our private rotenburo (open-air bath). The staff demonstrated the highest level of omotenashi—genuinely welcoming, gracious, and accommodating throughout our entire stay. One key tip: make sure you come hungry! The multi-course kaiseki dinner and breakfast sets are not only masterfully executed, but the portions are huge. Impeccable location, top-tier hospitality, and worth every penny. Highly recommended.

I have stayed at dozens of luxury hotels around the world, and this one easily ranks among the very best. 100% of the staff exude a genuine passion for their work and truly care about your experience. A special thank you to Miss Huang, who gave us a wonderful tour of the hotel during check-in. It was such a comfort to have a fellow Taiwanese staff member speak our native language and ensure everything was smooth from the start. I also want to highlight Mr. Hayasaka. Although we faced a minor language barrier, he went above and beyond to prepare a dinner menu for my child last night. The complimentary alcoholic drinks at the minibar and the onsen area were also a fantastic touch. If I had to nitpick, the internet speed was a bit sluggish, and the mattress felt a bit too firm for my preference. Exceptional service overall from start to finish!
