Luxury ryokan and hotels in Hakone

Hakone is a hot-spring area within easy reach of Tokyo, and its luxury ryokan are the main reason many people come. The water and the views change by district: Gora sits on the slope above the valley, Sengokuhara is a high plateau of pampas grass, and the hotels around Lake Ashi look out over the water toward Mount Fuji.

How private the bath is varies from inn to inn. At some, every room has its own hot-spring bath; at others only certain room types do, and some offer private baths you reserve separately. If a private onsen is the point of your stay, check which room type comes with one — the comparison below shows what we have confirmed on each inn’s official site.

How private is the bath?

Grouped by what each property’s official site says. Not a ranking — check the room type when you book.

Every room has its own hot-spring bath

  • Hakone Suishoen

All 23 rooms have an open-air bath fed straight from the inn’s own spring. The shared bath is filtered.

All 70 rooms have an open-air hot-spring bath. Three private baths can be reserved for a fee (one is not hot-spring water).

  • FUFU Hakone

Every room type is listed with a hot-spring bath (Gora onsen) in a bathroom whose windows open wide — not a separate outdoor bath.

    Official sitechecked 8 October 2026

  • Hotel Hatsuhana+ private baths to reserve

Every room has an open-air bath on its terrace. Four private baths can also be reserved, 45 minutes at a time. The hotel cools its 57°C spring with groundwater and filters it.

Open-air baths in some room types only

  • Gora Kadan+ private baths to reserve

Open-air baths are listed for the Aoi, Fuji and Ume suites, the Matsu, Tsubaki and Suzukake rooms, and the room with a large stone bath. The standard rooms (types A–D) have an indoor hinoki bath; the site does not say whether it uses hot-spring water. The inn also has private open-air baths, which its FAQ offers to guests with larger tattoos; how to book them and the cost are not stated.
