Ryokan and hotels in Japan with a private onsen

For many first-time visitors, the idea of bathing naked with strangers is the one thing that holds them back from an onsen. A room with its own hot-spring bath solves that: you bathe when you like, as often as you like, with only the people you came with.

Whether a room has its own bath differs from inn to inn: every room at some, only certain room types at others, and at some a private bath you book separately. Check whether the bath is fed from a hot spring or heated tap water, and whether it is open-air or indoors. The table below sets this out room by room for the properties we have checked on their official sites; the stay reports on each page often show the rest.

Which room to book

Which room should you book?

What each property’s official site says about the bath in the room. Not a ranking. “All rooms” and “some rooms” are as the hotel states them; “Not confirmed” means we could not find it, not that it is missing.

A bath in your room and a private bath you reserve by the hour are different things. For what the terms mean, see private onsen terms explained.
